Weekday Sketcher Moved to THURSDAY

Thunderstorms are forecast for Wednesday but Thursday looks a bit better. Therefore we will meet on Thursday to sketch the whimsical statues on Broadway. See details below.   Sorry for any inconvenience.

Weekday Sketchers Hit Broadway!

Bonus: Recap of Urban Sketchers Porto Symposium

PLEASE NOTE:  We tried doing this in May but after about an hour we were rained out.  All agreed that the statues were terrific, so let's try this location again.  See below for new day/date.

Imagine a giant snail crawling up Broadway, or a moose dancing with a tree, or a large mouse atop an acorn squash standing on 79th Street.  Impossible you say?  Not this summer when a whimsical installation by Kathy Ruttenberg has been placed at 6 locations along Broadway.

Here is an article about the exhibition: https://www.westsiderag.com/2018/03/22/a-giant-snail-and-more-public-art-coming-to-broadway-median

All of the sculptures are located on the plaza near subway stops along Broadway. We will meet first at 64th St near Lincoln Center.  After sketching for about an hour we will continue up Broadway to sketch as many as we can within a reasonable time. Some are easy walking distance and some might require hopping on a bus or subway.  Bring a stool, some lunch, a hat and plenty of pages to capture the "Broadway Show", In Drams Awake.

SATURDAY: Sketching THE View in DUMBO

DUMBO - the view from the World Trade Center

Ahh DUMBO..
maybe the coolest neighborhood
in ultra-cool Brooklyn

Dumbo - short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass is a great neighborhood for sketching.  Originally a ferry landing, it was the commuting spot for Brooklynites heading to Manhattan.  The area is filled with 19th- and early 20th-century industrial and warehouse buildings, cobblestone streets, and long shadows.

Urban Sketchers capturing THE view,
In the late 20th century it was remade into an upscale residential and commercial community—first becoming a haven for art galleries, and currently a center for technology startups, including the world headquarters for Etsy.  In that time, Dumbo had become Brooklyn's most expensive neighborhood, as well as New York City's fourth-richest community overall; this is owing in part to its large
concentration of technology startups, its close proximity to Manhattan, and its large number of former industrial buildings that have been converted into spacious luxury residential lofts.

The area is well worth exploring but most would agree that the single most incredible view is found looking to the East River from Washington Street at the corner of Water Street.  That's where we will spend the morning sketching.

DETAILS
What:  Sketch DUMBO ((Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass))

Where: We'll meet at Washington Street at the corner of Water Street in DUMBO.

When:  Start time - 10 AM.   Running late?  Messed up by the subways?  Come anyway - we'll be there.

How:
-   By Subway:  It's about a ten minute walk downhill from all the subway choices.

Exit onto Cadman Plaza West. Walk left, toward the overhead highway; the street changes name to Old Fulton Street. Walk down the hill and bear left as you approach the East River. Continue on Fulton to DUMBO's Front Street to get a sense of the neighborhood. Make a left at Washington Street and walk one block towards the river to Water Street.  That corner is our meeting spot. (see map).

Weekday Sketchers at Prospect Park Boat House Wednesday

Travel to Brooklyn to a different time and place this week when we sketch the Prospect Park Boat House.  One of the most romantic locations in the city and has become a prime wedding venue. This Beau Arts confection is set on the Lullwater of the the Prospect Park lake, offering us sketching opportunities near the boat house and  over the water from surrounding bridges.

An option for the afternoon sketching is the nearby Carousel with it's dragon pulled chariots, lions, deer and fanciful horses.

SUNDAY: Sketch on Roosevelt Island

Richard Alomar has invited NYC Urban Sketchers to join a group of Landscape Architects sketching Roosevelt Island.

Our event this coming weekend will take place on Sunday. Join Richard on July 8 2018 for a Sketch Walk around Roosevelt Island. The group will walk, view landmarks discuss the history of the island and sketch.

Meet at the front of the Roosevelt Island train station at 10 AM. Richard says there will be food trucks on the island that day, so plenty of good food to be had. There are also many public bathrooms. Sketching will last until 3 PM

If you have any questions contact Richard directly: richard.alomar.la@gmail.com.
