SUNDAY: Westchester Sketchers at Muscoot Farm

Muscoot Farm was originally a gentleman's farm owned by the Hopkins family and used as their summer estate and dairy farm from 1880 to 1924. In 1924 the family moved to the farm year-round and continued the dairy business until 1967 when Westchester County acquired the property.

Today, Muscoot Farm has many of the original buildings, some of which were moved to accommodate the Muscoot Reservoir. Visitors can walk through the dairy barn, milk house, ice house, blacksmith shop, and several other barns and buildings. Livestock and poultry are breeds typical of an early 20th-century gentleman's farm and many represent minor rare breeds. The Main House is used to exhibit monthly art shows by local artists.

FRIDAY: Westchester Sketchers at Untermyer Gardens

Untermyer Park is a historic 43 acre park, located in YonkersNY, just north of New York City.  Also known as Untermyer Gardens, the park was previously part of an estate known as Greystone.  Situated on a hillside above the Hudson River, the park features a "Grecian garden" (actually a Persian Paradise garden), a small Grecian-style amphitheater, a classical pavilion, pergola, statuary, a rock and water feature called the "Temple of Love" and a "Vista" staircase.  To the west, the park has views of the Hudson River and the Palisades.

The gardens were developed during the first 40 years of the 20th century by prominent lawyer and civic leader, Samuel Untermyer.  Mr. Untermyer devoted approximately one third of what was then Greystone's 150-acres to its gardens, which were considered among the finest in America.

Weekday Sketchers at Elizabeth Street Garden

NY_NYC_ElizabethStreetGarden_06_ESG.JPG | Garden features, Black eyed susan, Public garden

Of all the gardens in NYC, the Elizabeth Street Garden is truly unique.  It is part of the history of the Lower East Side: it is a bit unkempt, very quirky, fun to be in and fabulous to draw.  Come and spend the day with lions, funerary urns, reclining ladies and a strange array of artifacts hauled in from buildings being taken down in the neighborhood.  Come and enjoy the scenery, the flowers and the shade of the trees that are interspersed between the architectural artifacts.

If you have been here before, you will find new and interesting things to draw.  If you have never been here you in for a wonderful treat. Come and celebrate this truly odd and remarkable place before the developers come and take it away.

SATURDAY: Sketch The Gardens at St. Luke in the Fields

Lauded in the village as the “secret” garden, the Gardens at St. Luke is a little known oasis to escape the city. High brick walls run the perimeter of the garden, creating a perfect retreat to read and smell the flowers and sketch.

The gardens’ southwest orientation and heat-retaining brick walls create a warm micro-climate, allowing a wide variety of flora and fauna to thrive. This green space, with its abundance of berries and flowers, provides a small but important way-station for migrating birds and butterflies during the spring and fall seasons. Over 100 species of birds and 24 types of moths and butterflies have been recorded.

The Garden has asked all visitors to be masked.  The garden doesn’t open until noon on Saturday which is the reason we’re starting late.

SATURDAY - July 16 - Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket: America’s Famous Seaside Resorts

Let’s visit and sketch the classic New England summer retreat off Cape Cod. The world-famous resort islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are located just south of Cape Cod, off the Atlantic seacoast. Both islands are a dream for photographers and artists, with stunning beaches, beautiful landscapes, historic lighthouses, charming storefronts and cottages, and colorful gardens.

The Island of Martha’s Vineyard is just seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. On less than 100 square miles, you’ll find six small towns, each with their own distinctive personality. The island has 17,000 year-round residents, although the population swells to 200,000 during the summer.

Nantucket is a small island of size similar to Martha’s Vineyard. It is located about 38 miles east of Martha’s Vineyard and has 14,000 year-round residents. The population of Nantucket swells to 80,000 during the summer months. Nantucket is known for its sand dune beaches and unpainted cedar-shingled buildings.
