Workshop with Susan Greenstein

A Watercolor Journey in Greens

When: May 25, 2024 with a rain date of May 26

Where: We will meet at the corner of Prospect Park West and 15th Street, at the entrance to Prospect Park, Brooklyn.

How: Click Here

Susan Greenstein is an accomplished artist living in New York City. She is a graduate of Pratt Institute and Queens College and has exhibited extensively in New York City, New Hampshire and the Delaware Fine Arts Museum. Her work can be found in private collections across the United States. You can learn more about Susan and her work at www.susangreenstein.com and in a recently-published article: https://boldjourney.com/news/meet-susan-greenstein/

In this watercolor workshop, Susan Greenstein will show how to open options in landscape painting by going beyond the green in a tube of paint. Through a step-by-step approach she will help us understand and expand the types of greens in our palettes. We’ll learn how other colors, along with the use of light and deep space, allow greens to really shine.

Weekday Sketchers at Ukrainian Institute

Ukrainian Institute of America

How often have you walked by one of those beautiful  mansions on the Upper East Side and thought...."Oooh, wouldn't it be nice to see what is inside?

Well this is your chance!

Thanks for Claudia Schellenberg for making arrangement for us to visit the Ukrainian Institute on the corner of 5th Avenue and 79th Street.  Once owned by the oil industrialist Henry Sinclair and then the last remaining direct descendent of Governor Peter Stuyvesant, the building is one of the remaining mansions built  during the Gilded Age in the late 19th century. It is now owned by the Ukrainian Institute which is  dedicated to preserving Ukrainian culture in art, music, literature and customs.

Afternoon Session Workshop with Gavin Snider

 Afternoon Session

Workshop with Gavin Snider

Painting Brooklyn Brownstones

When: April 27th with a rain date of April 28, 2024 2:00pm-5pm
Where: 95 Prospect Park West Brooklyn, NY 11215
How: Click Here
About this event:

Gavin Snider is an artist who lives and works in New York. He spends his days painting the city and the people in it.

In this workshop, Gavin will focus on the architecture of Brooklyn, specifically the brownstone. He'll show you how he builds up a watercolor from the blank page, "carving out" the painting with increasing levels of detail. He'll talk about composing with negative space, applying light and shadow, and approaching both architectural and landscape elements in a painting.

We will meet on the corner of 5th Street and Prospect Park West. There's lots of space and people to paint and you can also turn around and paint the Litchfield Mansion as an alternative to the brownstones. Restrooms are located in the park at the Picnic House and the Bandshell.

Workshop is scheduled for April 27. We have a rain date of April 28. As the day approaches we will assess the weather and communicate via the email address you used to enroll.

To see more about Gavin visit his website.

For more information see event page.

SATURDAY:: Sketch CANCELLED

CANCELLED ** Sketch ** CANCELLED

The reports are for overwhelming rain today.  I watched the late news last night and saw MTA employees bolting special Flood Gates to the subway ventilation system.  The city doesn't need us adding to the stress of running critical systems.

Want some Good News?  I'll be posting the recording or the last WinterTalk this morning.  If you missed Dina's wonderful deeply researched presentation you'll be able to see what everyone was talking about.  Be sure to stay for the discussion at the end.
Enjoy the day - and stay dry!

There are no fees or attendance taken. All drawing skill levels are welcome

Studio and Workshop

Chaim Gross was an immigrant who fled war-torn Europe in the 1920s and eventually came to study and work in NYC when it was a the thriving center of mid century art: artists, actors and writers were working to push boundaries in every art form.  Gross's works were no exception.

Following a common practice in the art world, artists traded their works with other of their contemporaries, resulting in incredible personal collections.  You can view Gross's collection which hangs in their apartment and the stairwell of the building.  Gross also was an avid collector of African artifacts and art which is also on display in this apartment.

SUNDAY: Westchester Sketchers at the Neuberger Museum of Art, SUNY Purchase College

The Neuberger Museum of Art, located at the heart of SUNY Purchase College, is a vital cultural resource of modern, contemporary, and African art for Westchester County, NY, and beyond.  From the mid-century American and African art that form the collection's core to the presentation of contemporary art, the museum continues the commitment of founding patron Roy R. Neuberger (1903-2010) by championing the art of our time.

IT'S NOT EASY BEING GREEN

The drawing of the Green. That is what we will do for this St Patrick's Day sketch event. We pose a challenge, (optional, of course). See how many shades of green you can infuse your painting with. Or, do an all-green monochromatic sketch/painting. Come join us and have fun.

Current exhibits include:

The Making of a Museum: 50 Years

For fifty years, the Neuberger Museum of Art has fostered learning, sparked the creative process, and investigated understandings of the world in which we live through its collections, exhibitions, and education programs. This exhibit commemorates the 50th anniversary of the museum's founding and features many of the works of art that form the core of the current collection. The show explores the role of Roy N. Neuberger as one of the most important collectors of his day, and the conception, design and construction of the museum.

From Your Collection: Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Voices

This exhibition showcases the work of fifteen leading artists from across the Americas.   It features a selection of paintings, works on paper, photographs, and sculptures that have been donated to, or purchased by, the Neuberger Museum of Art over the last decade. Many of these works tie to global contemporary debates, while also referencing specific realities through a variety of voices in order to better understand the global nature of the world we live in, and explore the multiple voices at the base of fruitful contemporary debates that challenge it.

SATURDAY: Sketch the Central Synagogue

Sketching the Central Synagogue
Created and Hosted by Susan Hurwich

My walking path to get to the High School of Art & Design Draw-a-thon usually takes me past the Central Synagogue on Lexington Ave.  The place always fascinated me. The architecture (Moorish Revival) is unusual.  We've never attempted sketching the exterior. Each year, as I walked past, I observed that the surrounding tall buildings kept the sunshine from creating the beautiful shadows we all love to sketch.   How unfortunate, I’d think, and then, as an afterthought I always wondered what it looks like on the inside.

Susan Hurwich  arranged for a special sketching opportunity this coming Saturday.  We will arrive after the morning Sabbath service and will sketch at the Synagogue until mid afternoon.  I am so curious to see the interior.  It looks gorgeous.

Pay attention to the details, - the times for this sketch are different from our usual plan.

CENTRAL SYNAGOGUE

Central Synagogue was designed by Henry Fernbach, a prominent Jewish American architect in 1871. The style is Moorish Revival.  The dramatic design was the subject of much debate during the construction.

Options for (pencil sketching only) include::

1) Stained Glass -  The side walls of the Sanctuary feature 12, 2 story stained glass windows created in 1948, and the northeast roundel has glass salvaged from a 1998 fire dedicated to the firefighters who saved so much of the building.

2) Stencil Work - The synagogue’s interior covers the walls with highly patterned, colorful designs – historic and elaborate floral and lattice work patterns.

3) The Wonderful Details -  The pews are made of intricately carved walnut and ash. 40,000 encaustic tiles make up the floor tiles in a wide range of colors, patterns and sizes.

DETAILS:

WHAT:  We will be sketching the interior of the Central Synagogue

WHEN:   We’ll start our day on March 16, 2024 at  11:30  AM and we’ll need to leave at 2 PM

WHERE:  The Synagogue is located at 652 Lexington Ave.  Our entrance is on 55 th street off the corner of Lexington Ave. It has a lobby with security guards.  Meet there at 11:30.  The morning service in the Sanctuary ends at that time.

HOW:  We’ve been asked to limit our sketching to pencil only.  I’m thinking that the brilliant stained glass windows demand color, so I’ll be bringing colored pencils.

LUNCH:  Come well fed.  We only have a short time there so we have no lunch planned.

SHOW and TELL:   2:00 PM.  Without knowing the place it’s hard to say where.  We’ll figure it out on site.  This is the social part of our sketching day, when we share our artwork and talk about the things that interest artists.  (Best conversations of the week!)

NOTE:

-  Although I always suggest bringing a stool, we’ll probably be able to use the pews.
