Call for Entries

NYC Urban Sketchers Westchester Exhibit

Entry Deadline: February 12, 2023

Where: Warner Library, 121 North Broadway, Tarrytown, NY

When: March 1- 31, 2023

Eligibility: NYC USk Sketchers who completed works after 2020 “on location” or “en plein air” at a Westchester sketching event.

A maximum of 3 works in any medium may be submitted for consideration. There is no entry fee. If the number of submissions is too high, the number of pieces per person will be reduced. Please identify the order of preference for your entries with 1, 2, and 3. Upon acceptance, you will be provided with an artist identification form to fill out and tape to the back of your artwork. Each entry must be framed, wired, and ready to hang.

Entries must be delivered to Cathy Gutterman or Susan Chavez beforehand as hanging takes a long time. They must also be picked up from the Warner Library on or before March 31st.

Submission: Please send the digital image(s) and the framed/unframed dimensions for each of your works to cathygutterman@verizon.net by February 12, 2023.

Exhibit set-up: Wednesday, March 1, 2023

Reception: Saturday, March 18, 2023, 2:00-4:00 PM

Weekday Sketchers at the Met THURSDAY

 

Isn't it a shame that the Met has so many broken statues? All those missing arms and legs, broken noses and toes?  What a crying shame!  

Ah, but Urban Sketchers is  here to fix it!  

Is he holding something? 

What's behind her? 

Join us this week as we scour the Met and find the missing pieces.  

Come and put back the arms and legs. (maybe borrow them from a Zebra or Moose?) Maybe put a wig on a bald head or a funny nose on some poor soul who has lost one. What about a hat or two? And isn't it about time that Degas' ballerina got a new dress? Come with us and imagine a range of possibilities that doesn't really exist!  

And it doesn't have to be the Roman and Greek statues. What about the Mayan exhibit or all those fellow from the Medieval castles?  Couldn't they use a new outfit or two? 

Not interested in this idea? There is plenty more to do at the Met.  Visit one of the new exhibits or revisit an old one.  Then join us for lunch and show us you drawings!

SUNDAY: Westchester Sketchers at the Neuberger Museum, SUNY Purchase

 

The Neuberger Museum of Art, located at the heart of SUNY Purchase College, is a vital cultural resource of modern, contemporary, and African art for Westchester County, NY, and beyond.  From the mid-century American and African art that form the collection's core to the presentation of contemporary art, the museum continues the commitment of founding patron Roy R. Neuberger (1903-2010) by championing the art of our time.

Exhibits on view include:

A Special Look: Louis Michel Eilshemius

The largest body of work by a single artist in the Neuberger Museum of Art’s collection is by Louis Michel Eilshemius, who is represented by more than a hundred paintings, watercolors, and drawings.

This exhibit features a focused group of works created by the artist between 1874 and 1909 that reflect his academic training and interest in the longstanding European tradition of landscape painting.  Like many of his predecessors from the nineteenth century, Eilshemius traveled throughout Europe and made several journeys to distant countries.  His works were created both “en plein air,” and in his studio after images from his sketchbook.

Then and Now: Modern and Contemporary Selections from the Permanent Collection

Included in Then and Now are works by some of our most beloved artists including Milton Avery, Romare Bearden, Stuart Davis, Willem de Kooning, Richard Diebenkorn, Arthur Dove, Helen Frankenthaler, Marsden Hartley, Hans Hofmann, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and David Smith.  Amid these works contemporary art from the collection also are installed, in keeping with the spirit of our founding patron, Roy R. Neuberger, who was committed to supporting the work of living artists, particularly during the formative years of their careers.  As he once observed, “The contemporary world should buy the work of contemporary artists.”

PARKING Information:
Museum visitors can park in the West 1 visitor parking lot.  To reach the West 1 parking lot from the main entrance, turn left and stay left on Brigid Flanagan Drive.  Continue for approximately one mile and the entrance to the West 1 parking lot will be on your right.  

The Museum is located on the Southwest side of the Main Campus Plaza.  Please walk up the stairs, near Parking West 1, and continue to walk straight, following the signs to the Neuberger Museum of Art. 

Special Needs Access: 

The Neuberger Museum of Art is wheelchair accessible throughout the building, including galleries and restrooms. Wheelchairs are available without charge at the museum’s entrance. Gallery stools are available by request.

LUNCH: Due to our later start, we will not break for lunch.  Please bring a snack/lunch to have if you get hungry. There are no food options at the Museum Store.  However, there are options on campus.

SHOW and TELL: 3:00 PM. We will share our drawings and tell stories. This is the social part of our day and is not to be missed.

NOTES: 

• Admission is currently FREE for all visitors.
• Masks are mandatory indoors. 
• Stools will be available from the Museum.

SATURDAY: Sketch the Brooklyn Museum

 

In any other city it would be the major cultural center.  In New York City, the Brooklyn Museum is our forgotten treasure.  The museum is home to an exquisite collection housed in a fabulous Beaux Arts building.   Anywhere you choose to sketch you'll have a wonderful subject.

The Egyptian collection is world renowned as are many of the Asian art collections.  The American decorative Arts collection is endless and the colonial homes and period rooms on the top floor are fascinating.  To say nothing of the permanent installation of Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Party". ( a MUST see if you haven't ever done so!) And on and on it goes!

When:  Meet at 11 AM in the lobby.  There's a coat check.  After that we'll be fanning out to the different floors and collections. Anyone with a sketchbook is undoubtedly a fellow Urban Sketcher

Climate Change Mitigation Sketching in 2023

Across the Globe we are witnessing coral reefs bleaching, inland lakes and rivers drying up, increased intensity of tropical storms, increased frequency of droughts and wildfires, melting sea ice, and global average sea level rise of six inches in the past 100 years. These are the just some of the real world effects of Climate Change. But close to home are real time efforts occurring to combat Climate Change.

In 2023 NYC Urban Sketchers plans to document through our art Climate Change Mitigation projects in our city and surrounding area. We need your help. Attached is a link to a Google Forms questionnaire on Facebook asking for your suggestions for potential locations for sketching that focuses on combatting Climate Change. Please submit your ideas.

 The Hudson River Museum is a preeminent cultural institution in Westchester County and the New York metropolitan area.  Situated on the banks of the Hudson River in Yonkers, New York, the HRM’s mission is to engage, inspire, and connect diverse communities through the power of the arts, sciences, and history.

Current exhibitions include:

Frederick J. Brown: A Drawing in Five Parts

This exhibition features Brown’s series of five monumental works on paper titled The Actress: A Drawing in Five Parts, a recent gift to the Museum. The series explores the emotive progression of a stage performance by actor Jillian O’Brien. Homing in on Brown’s interests in Black expression, performance, and creativity, this exhibition turns a lens on his unique, experimental, and powerful practice of portraiture.

Matrix: Prints by Women Artists, 1960–1990

Printmaking has served as a stepping stone for many women artists, enabling their work to reach the masses thanks to its accessible form. Matrix: Prints by Women Artists, 1960–1990 explores a period of experimentation in printmaking among women artists, who used the art form as a means of creative expression and also a way to enter the male-dominated art market.

Federico Uribe: Plastic Reef

Federico Uribe’s Plastic Reef reminds us of the fragility of life and invites us to reflect on the indiscriminate use of plastic and its disastrous impact. From a distance, Plastic Reef appears to be a colorful and beautiful underwater world filled with corals, mussels, and schools of fish. Up close, you discover it is, in fact, thousands of pieces of upcycled plastic that are carefully cut and whimsically arranged. Weaving together these discarded plastic bottles, caps, cutlery, flip flops, and more in curious and unpredictable ways, Uribe presents his vision of a coral reef and its interdependent life forms.

Optional: Gilded Age Glenview: Historic House Tour at 1 PM  

Travel back in time to the Gilded Age!  Enjoy a 45-minute guided tour of historic Glenview’s six fully restored period rooms decorated for the holidays.  Advance tickets are strongly encouraged.

LUNCH: Since the Museum opens at Noon, we won’t have a scheduled time for lunch. Please bring your own lunch/snack, or purchase something from the Museum Shop.

SHOW and TELL: 2:30 PM A classroom has been reserved for us from 2:30-5 PM. This is the social portion of our day when we will share our drawings, techniques, and stories. It is a time not to be missed.

The art work on the mezzanine level of the new 2nd Ave Subway stations is worth the trip from anywhere! And this week we will be making the trip and sketching the stations. 

We will meet at the 96th Street Station on the Mezzanine Level of the Q Train.  We will sketch for 40 minutes and get then ride to the next stop and so on and so on down to the 63rd Street Station. .  Bring a stool and your lunch.  Bathrooms should be available at all stations.

Gavin Snider is an artist who lives and works in New York City. In this workshop, Gavin will teach you how to capture the energy of a scene by going straight to the final artwork, painting architecture and people confidently without pencil lines. His workshop will focus on building a painting from light to dark, using value to capture detail and motion.

New Jersey Sketchers at the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts....Again!

Museum of Early Trades and Crafts

In January we visited this lovely museum to sketch the heavily decorated interior.  At that time we said...let's come back and sketch the outside of the building as well.  Now it is time to return and make it happen. 

Join us for a day of sketching at the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts. The museum is in the James Library Building. Built in 1899, this is a fine example of Richardsonian Romanesque Revival architecture.

While our objective is to sketch the exterior of this Victorian confection, there is plenty to do on the inside should the weather call for a cooler or drying place.

SATURDAY: Sketch Southeby's

The famed international auction house is the site for our Saturday sketch this week.  You'll be surrounded by beautiful objects and interesting customers.  The displays are on many floors and the collection of items to be auctioned always changes.  There's always something fabulous to sketch at Sotheby’s.  The staff at Sotheby's has always been warm and welcoming to urban sketching.  

You will almost certainly see something that will get your creative juices going.  By the way, if Joan Tavolott joins us, be sure to ask her about the time she sold her original art at Sotheby's.  It’s one of my favorite art stories.

Weekday Sketchers at St. Barts and Central Synagogue

Join us this week as we visit two iconic houses of worship in Mid Manhattan.    

Central Synagogue Exterior 

We will start our journey at St. Bartholomew's Church on Park Avenue, designed by Stanford White in the Romanesque Style, this is one of the most beautiful houses of worship in New York City.  Beautiful mosaics designed by Hildreth Meiere , a soaring dome, the triple marble porch and heavily painted interior make this church an architectural treasure.
