What:  Sketch DUMBO ((Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass))

Where: We'll meet at Washington Street at the corner of Water Street in DUMBO.

When:  Start time - 10 AM.   Running late?  Messed up by the subways?  Come anyway - we'll be there.

How:
-   By Subway:  It's about a ten minute walk downhill from all the subway choices.

A/C train to High Street,

Exit onto Cadman Plaza West. Walk left, toward the overhead highway; the street changes name to Old Fulton Street. Walk down the hill and bear left as you approach the East River. Continue on Fulton to DUMBO's Front Street to get a sense of the neighborhood. Make a left at Washington Street and walk one block towards the river to Water Street.  That corner is our meeting spot. (see map).

2/3 train to Clark Street,

Take the Henry Street exit. Walk left on Henry Street. Go left on Cadman Plaza West/Old Fulton Street and walk downhill to the entrance to Brooklyn Bridge Park, located at the bottom of the hill, at the waterfront.  From there proceed to Water and Washington streets (see map).

F train to York Street,

Special Treat:

Take the ferry at Wall Street / Pier 11 which cuts across the East River and deposits you in DUMBO eight minutes later.  Weekend ferries leave every 35 minutes. Fares for passengers are $2.75

Lunch:  We'll break at 12:15 to purchase lunch - or bring  your own. We'll meet at 12:30 for a picnic lunch at a shady spot in the vicinity of Jane's Carousel.

Show and Tell:  3:00 PM - Outdoors in the park.  We'll meet near our lunch spot by the carousel where we'll share drawing and tell stories about our art exploits, and who knows, maybe we'll even discuss art materials.

Weekday Sketchers on Little Island

Can you imagine being able to build an island in the Hudson River and then load it up with beautiful trees, paths, an amphitheater. an outdoor food court, fun things to do, like a keyboard built into the floor and optical illusions spinning in space.  Well you don't have to imagine it.  It is here!  

Join us this week as we explore the newest piece of real estate in NYC.  Come to Little Island and spend the day experiencing this most unusual place, its landscaping and all the people coming and going up and down the hills and trails.

NOTES

• Little Island is at the western end of 14th Street near the Whitney Museum.
• Entrance is free and unrestricted before noon.  If you come after noon you must make a reservation on line.
• There are bathrooms and a food concession on the island but you can bring your own lunch and drinks.
• Bring a stool as there are some but not many benches.

THURSDAY: Westchester Sketchers at Untermyer Park and Gardens in Yonkers, NY

 

Untermyer Park is a historic 43 acre park, located in Yonkers, NY, just north of New York City. Also known as Untermyer Gardens, the park was previously part of an estate known as Greystone. Situated on a hillside above the Hudson River, the park features a "Grecian garden" (actually a Persian Paradise garden), a small Grecian-style amphitheater, a classical pavilion, pergola, statuary, a rock and water feature called the "Temple of Love" and a "Vista" staircase. To the west, the park has views of the Hudson River and the Palisades.

The gardens were developed during the first 40 years of the 20th century by prominent lawyer and civic leader, Samuel Untermyer. Mr. Untermyer devoted approximately one third of what was then Greystone's 150-acres to its gardens, which were considered among the finest in America.

NOTE: There are spaces for about 75 cars in the parking lots. In addition, there is street parking along North Broadway which is both metered (coin operated) and unmetered.

TRANSPORTATION from NYC: Take the Metro North – Hudson Line north to the Greystone Station. There is an off-peak train which departs Grand Central at 9:20 AM and arrives 9:58 AM at Greystone.  Please contact Marianne ((914) 355-6507) if you would like to someone to meet the train and provide a ride from the station.

NOTE: The gardens are a 20 minute uphill walk from the station: walk uphill from the station to find the stairs on the left to Warburton Avenue. Climb the stairs. Cross Warburton Avenue and go up Odell Avenue until it ends at North Broadway. Turn right on North Broadway and walk to 945 N. Broadway, which is on the right. Caution: this is a significant uphill walk of more than 200 feet in elevation. The Greystone Metro-North station does not have a taxi stand.

LUNCH: 1:00 PM. We will have lunch by the designated picnic area.  Bring your own as the park has no options for purchasing food.

SHOW and TELL: Following lunch, we will share our drawings and tell stories.  This is the social part of our day and not to be missed.

NOTES:
- All unvaccinated visitors must wear masks.
- Bring a stool if you have one. It gives you more options.
- Dress for sunshine. Bring a hat, water and sunscreen.
- Garden etiquette: Stay on the paths or lawns.

SUNDAY: Sketch Governors Island

 

A boat ride across New York Harbor 

with views people travel thousands of miles to see,
fresh ai​​r,​ on​ ​a small island - filled with surprises.

Governors Island, a 172 acre island in the heart of New York Harbor,
is only 800 yards from Lower Manhattan, and even closer to Brooklyn.  
It feels like an adventure getting there 

and the island itself is filled with sketchable sites and views

During the morning we are going to focus on the interior of the island focusing on the Colonels Row area.   In the afternoon we’ll be painting the views from the harbor including the Statue of Liberty and the Wall Street area harbor view.

When:   This Sunday, September 26, 2021.  I'll be waiting on line to take the 10 AM ​free ​ferry.  There are two more free trips, at 10:40 AM and 11:20 AM.  After that round trip tickets cost $3.  If you come ​after the first ferry bring my phone number - text or call to find out where we are.

IMPORTANT:  You need to purchase or get your free tickets in advance.  Yes you need to be able to show your FREE ticket.

The Governors Island Ferry makes weekend trips from Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 6.  The first ferry of the day leaves at 10:15 and departs hourly.

Lunch:   12:00 PM - Noon.  Meeting place will be established when we arrive.  Bring your own food or rely on the island vendors (there are several and there are always lines)

Afternoon:   1:00 PM - Back Sketching

Show and Tell:  2:30 PM  Meet at the established meeting spot where we will share stories show our drawings and probably talk about art supplies.

Leaving the Island:   We will try to be on the 3:40 PM ferry back to Manhattan.  They would like us to arrive ​at the ferry ​at 3:25 PM

TUESDAY: Westchester Sketchers at Glen Island Park

This 105-acre island property is connected to New Rochelle by a drawbridge built in the 1920s. After Playland, Glen Island is the second most widely used park in the County Parks system. One of Westchester’s unique jewels, it was initially developed as a summer resort by John H. Starin. The original design exhibited the five cultures of the western world on individual islands linked together with piers and causeways. Today the islands have been merged with substantial fill areas totaling 130 acres and providing a beautiful crescent shaped beach with access to the Long Island Sound.

Cannons, sculptures and castles with coursed rubble stone, arched openings and round towers still remain from the days of John Starin’s resort. The castles, reminiscent of those in Germany's Rhineland, were constructed on their present site in the late 19th century for use as a beer garden and restaurant.

The bathhouse was originally built in a Neo-Georgian style with a cupola marking the center of the front façade. A courtyard looks out to the beach and is completed by a colonnade. The bridge, bridge house, seawall and castles are all eligible for listing on the Register of Historic Places.

 Weekday Sketchers at Lighthouse Museum 

Only a few blocks from the Ferry Terminal in St. George on Staten Island,  The National Lighthouse Museums is treasure trove of all things lighthouses.  Situated in a section of the waterfront, among antique buildings that is a destination in and of itself. we could have a great time sketching away the day..., BUT... there is yet another reason to go there!  Adjacent to the lighthouse is a pier that juts out into Upper New York Bay, affording us great views of the river, the Verrazzano Brooklyn, Staten Island and Manhattan.

LOCATION: NATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE MUSEUM, STATEN ISLAND

TRANSPORTATION: The R or W subway to Whitehall Street and then the Staten Island Ferry

NOTES 

• We will meet inside the Staten Island Ferry Terminal at 10:15 AM in order to catch the 10:30 ferry. The museum is a 5 minute walk from the terminal.  
• If you arrive later, just take any ferry to Staten Island and walk to the museum which is to the left of the terminal as you exit.  The ferry runs every half hour.
• There is a fee to enter the National Lighthouse Museum. Seniors $5. Juniors $7. The American Alliance of Museums pass is accepted for free entrance.  
• There is no charge to walk on the grounds or go on the pier.
• Bring your lunch, a stool and sunblock. There are food vendors in the ferry terminal so you can pick up something on your way. 
• Bathrooms are available in the museum

Calling All Sketchers and Folk Music Lovers

Once again NYC Urban Sketchers has been invited to sketch at the Hudson West Folk Festival in Jersey City on Saturday October  16, 2021.  The festival runs from noon to 10 PM.  You can come all day or any part of it that you like.  There is no charge to Urban Sketchers BUT you must be registered in advance. SATURDAY: Workshop - Discover Painting with Acrylic Ink

 

Saturday October 2nd:  

Join Artist/Author - Missy Dunaway for 

an exciting day sketching in the park

Bring your sketchbook and acrylic inks for a day of urban sketching with artist and author Missy Dunaway. This class is a great introduction to painting with acrylic ink and working "form first." 

Missy will demonstrate how she begins a painting by breaking down a complex composition into large, simplified shapes of color, then gradually refining forms and adding detail. The lesson will focus on exaggerating the nuance of color in light, capturing accurate proportions for a realistic rendering, and breaking free from reality to heighten an evocative atmosphere that viewers can feel. Missy will begin class with a demo then go from student to student to offer personalized guidance.

Materials list: You are welcome to bring your favorite art materials from home, as the general concepts of the lesson can be applied to any media. If you would like to try something new, ​Missy recommend​s​ acrylic ink. Here's what's in ​her painter's box. ​Missy ​​will bring extra to share.

-1 Moleskine Sketchbook (the classic sketchbook, size large)

-FW Acrylic Artist Ink by Daler Rowney

Colors: Process Cyan, Rowney Blue, Indian Yellow, Process Yellow, Flame Red, Crimson, Light Green, White

 

-Watercolor brushes

I use Winsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable Brushes. If you prefer a synthetic, I recommend Princeton Heritage Series 4050 Synthetic Sable. A range of sizes is preferred, from 2 - 10.

 

-I mix my colors directly on the page and do not use a palette. However, you may prefer one, and that's fine! An egg carton palette is great for a fluid medium like acrylic ink.

 

-I avoid spills and ensure my ink jars are safe and upright by keeping them in a painter's box. A shoebox should work just as well.

SATURDAY: Westchester Sketchers at Hastings Farmers Market

 

The Hastings Farmers Market is Westchester's premier farmers' market with the most unique and eclectic blend of farmers and food artisans.  It is located in the commuter parking lot opposite the train station.  You’ll quickly find that its slogan is true, it is the most fun you’ll have in a parking lot. This isn’t any ordinary farmers’ market—you could spend hours here.  Peach and raspberry pies, farm-fresh produce, and goods from the Hudson Valley are only the beginning.  The  market also provides music and locally made ready-to-eat foods to take home or enjoy at the picnic tables overlooking the Hudson.

Need more inspiration? The Village of Hastings offers many other things to inspire your sketches -  a library, a train station, a quaint downtown with eclectic shops and restaurants, opportunities for people-watching, plus scenic river views.

The Everglades National Park is a 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve on the southern tip of the state of Florida. Often compared to a grassy, slow-moving river, the Everglades is made up of coastal mangroves, sawgrass marshes and pine flat-woods that are home to hundreds of animal species - including the manatee, leatherback turtle, American crocodile, and the elusive Florida panther.

SUNDAY: Sketch Life in Green-Wood Cemetery

 

If you’ve already sketched here - you know.   

But, if you haven’t, read a little bit about this remarkable location.  

It is truly a remarkable place.

Green-Wood is 478 spectacular acres of hills, valleys, glacial ponds and paths, throughout which exists one of the largest outdoor collections of 19th- and 20th-century statuary and mausoleums. Green Wood is filled with century-and-a-half-old trees providing a peaceful oasis to visitors, as well as its more than a half million permanent residents, including Leonard Bernstein, Boss Tweed, Charles Ebbets, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Horace Greeley, Civil War generals, baseball legends, politicians, artists, entertainers and inventors.

 A magnet for history buffs and bird watchers (home to Brooklyn’s Green Parrot population, … really!  You will see them.)  Green-Wood is also a Revolutionary War historic site - the Battle of Long Island was fought in 1776 across what are now its grounds. 

 Founded in 1838 Green-Wood Cemetery soon developed an international reputation for its magnificent beauty.  By 1860, Green-Wood was rivaling Niagara Falls as the country’s greatest tourist attraction.  Green-Wood’s popularity helped inspire the creation of public parks, including New York City’s Central and Prospect Parks.

When:  Sunday, September 18, 2021.  Meet at the front gate at 10 AM

Where: Green-Wood Cemetery, 500 25th Street and Fifth Avenue, Brooklyn.   We will meet just outside the main gate where we’ll start sketching.  (see map below)

                   

Lunch: 12:00 Noon - The weather should be wonderful, we’ll picnic together on the lawn in a shady spot.  I’d recommend Bringyourowni, there are some stores where you can buy food but it’s a bit of a hike.   

Afternoon:  1 PM - Back sketching.

Show and Tell:  Meet at 3:00 PM at our lunch spot, where we’ll share our artwork, tell stories, and talk about art supplies.

NOTES:   Bring a portable stool if you have one. It adds to your comfort and increases your sketching possibilities.  Dress for full sunshine.
