We'll be having our annual Holiday Party on January 11th, 2020.  It won't be the same without, so we're hoping you'll be there.

SATURDAY: Sketch the Gooch!

With apologies, that would be the "Noguchi Museum" in Long Island City.  The Museum houses the artist's life's work in a physical context that he considered essential to his vision.  It's said that the light and construction materials compliment the artists work.  The Noguchi Museum was the first museum in America to be established by a living artist for the display of their work.

Interesting objects in a beautiful space for a day of meditative sketching.

LUNCH:  12:00  Noon - There is a Cafe in the museum.  We will also have a potential choice between two interesting but somewhat unusual lunch spots.  We'll decide, before noon.

AFTERNOON:  1:15 PM - Back to sketching at the museum

SHOW and TELL:  3 PM.  We'll try to have our closing at the museum.  If the space doesn't work we'll consider other options.  Show and Tell is the social part of the day where we share our day's drawings and tell cool art stories.  We might even talk about art supplies 

NOTE:
-  Bring a stool if you have one.  It increases your options.
-  There are no posted rules about drawing in the museum, but you should be agreeable and friendly towards the guards and comply with any rules.

FRIDAY: Westchester Sketchers at the Bruce Museum

December 27th

Sea serpents crushing ships. Seven-foot-tall giants. A mummified Porsche. What other oddities might you find to sketch in the Bruce Museum’s 2D curiosity cabinet? See for yourself by exploring the Bruce Museum’s new exhibition Collecting Reimagined: A 2D Curiosity Cabinet.

Curiosity cabinets are traditionally thought of as physical spaces filled with objects. However, scholars and artists in the past also used words and images to describe, and occasionally create, cabinets in two-dimensional form. In these works, the cabinet is shown on paper rather than displayed in a room.

Drawing inspiration from these cabinets on paper, this exhibition uses printed works, photographs, medals, textiles, and scrimshaw from the Bruce Museum collections to create a cabinet filled with two-dimensional depictions of typical three-dimensional cabinet objects.

LUNCH: 1:00 PM. No food service, so please bring your own. We will meet in the Education Workshop.

SHOW and TELL: Following lunch we will share our drawings and tell stories. This is the social part of our day and not to be missed.

NOTES:

- Admission is free right now as 2 galleries are closed for renovations. 

- The Permanent Science Gallery will be open.

- Stools will be available.

The AKC Museum of the Dog preserves, interprets and celebrates the role of dogs in society and educates the public about the human-canine bond through its collection of art and exhibits that inspire engagement with dogs.

Founded in 1982, the AKC Museum of the Dog was originally located in The New York Life Building at 51 Madison Avenue as a part of the AKC headquarters. In 1987, the Museum of the Dog was moved to a new location in Queeny Park, West St. Louis County, Missouri. After over 30 great years at Queeny Park, the decision was made to bring the Museum back to its original home and reunite it with the AKC headquarters and collection.

Combining fine art with high-tech interpretive displays, the Museum of the Dog’s new home at 101 Park Ave hopes to capture the hearts and minds of its visitors. Located in the iconic Kalikow building, the Museum will offer rotating exhibits featuring objects from its 1,700-piece collection and 4,000-volume library.

The Museum has welcomed New York City Urban Sketchers for this Saturday.  For dog fans /as a part of their Meet the Breed program there will be a beautiful live Gordon Setter visiting from 12 to 2 PM.   The owner/breeder will be discussing the breed which could be a great time for us to sketch.

WHERE: The American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, 101 Park Ave, (Finding it:  I'm told the real entrance is on 40th Street around the corner from 101 Park Ave.  Look for a picture of a dog above the entrance.)

HOW:
-    There is a fee but we are receive the special group rate.
-    Let the cashier know that you are an Urban Sketcher

-  The museum says stools are unnecessary.  They will provide chairs if we want to sit and sketch.  (I like these people!)

Weekday Sketchers at Met Wednesday to "Complete the Picture"

Did you ever wander through the Met and wonder what some of those partial statues really looked like when they were all in one piece? Or have you seen an incomplete artifact, suit of armor or relic and thought what the rest might have looked like? Then this is your chance to complete the picture.  Join us this week as we wander the museum and create "the rest of the story".  Use your imagination. Create a realistic drawing, or a cartoon....or even put an animal head or feet on a figure...just have fun.

Don't want to "fill in the blank?...that's ok too. Just join us and spend the day sketching anything that makes you happy!

SATURDAY: Sketch the National Museum of the American Indian

The building itself is a spectacular Beaux Arts edifice with wonderful murals and a very sketchable interior.   The exhibitions are always interesting.  It's actually part of the Smithsonian Institution.  Programing explores the diversity of the Native peoples of the Americas and the strength and continuity of their cultures from the earliest times to the present.

WHEN: This Saturday, December 14, 2019, starting at 10:00 AM.

WHERE: The National Museum of the American Indian, 1 Bowling Green, New York,
(Located in: Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House) 
The Museum is on the south side of Bowling Green, in lower Manhattan, adjacent to the northeast corner of Battery Park.

HOW:
-    Admission is free.
-    Anyone sketching there is almost guaranteed to be an Urban Sketcher

• 4 & 5 trains to Bowling Green
• 1 train to Rector Street or South Ferry
• R (& W on weekdays) trains to Whitehall Street
• J & Z trains to Broad Street
• 2 & 3 trains to Wall Street

Note:  The Museum is run by the Federal Government and is part of the Smithsonian.  Smithsonian security personnel conduct a thorough but speedy hand-check of visitors’ bags, briefcases, purses, strollers, and containers. Visitors are required to walk through a metal detector.

LUNCH:  12:00  Noon - Flavors Cafe at the corner of Whitehall and Bridge Sts.  Bring your own or purchase from Flavors (If you bring your own consider buying a drink from the cafe?)

AFTERNOON:  1:15 PM - Back to sketching the museum

SHOW and TELL:  3 PM.  We'll probably return to Flavors Cafe,  our lunch spot where we will get a drink or a snack and share our day's drawings while telling cool art stories.

Weekday Sketchers at St Bart's Thursday for Sketching and Concert

Join us this week for an opportunity to sketch in one of New York's most dynamic sanctuaries with its beautiful Gothic arches, stained glass, Hildreth Meier gold mosaics and numerous carvings.  To take a video tour click here:  https://stbarts.org/about-us/art-architecture/

We will also attend the weekly Great Music Series at 1:15 PM. The concert is free and will feature French music with a violin and harpsichord.

Saturday 12/7 at the Essex Market!

Yes, folks, there is a meet-up this weekend after all! Indoors at the Essex Market, with plenty of people and colorful things to sketch, lots of vendors for buying lunch, and even bathrooms (yay!). Bring a stool for sketching downstairs (try to stay out of the way). Upstairs there's a dining area with tables and chairs, more people to sketch, and some limited views of the vendors downstairs, and windows with street views.

WEEKEND: No official sketch event scheduled.

Sadly there is no official sketch event for this weekend.   Some family stuff has come up.  Since I'd love to be out sketching, and maybe you feel the same - I have two suggestions:

1) On occasion things come up.  It would be great if there was a small committee of people willing to jump in to run our usual sketch event.  Let me know if that's something you'd be willing to do by sending an email directly to me - markleibowitz810@gmail.com

2)  If you'd like to go out this weekend post where you'll be to our Facebook Group and let the other sketchers know how, where and when to find you.

Weekday Sketchers at Temple Emanuel Wednesday to see Barbra Streisand

Ok, its an exhibit not a performance. 

Join us for a day of sketching in the exhibit and the magnificent sanctuary with its gold mosaics designed by Hildeith Meiere, Tiffany stained glass and incredible soaring space.  

In addition, Temple Emanuel is currently hosting an exhibit in the Bernard Gallery about Barbra Streisand.  Costumes, contracts and videos of her work over the decades are on view. You can even sing along with her (and have us sketching you?) in a karaoke booth.
