SATURDAY: Sketch the New Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Bridge Park - Saturday, May 27, 2023

Brooklyn Bridge Park is an 85-acre world-class waterfront park on the Brooklyn side of the East River, with rolling hills, riverfront promenades, lush gardens, and spectacular city views.  We’ve explored the north part of the park, when sketching the incredible view of the Manhattan Bridge from Washington Street.  The south part of the park is much larger.  There are restaurants and cafes, lawns and gardens, bathrooms, playgrounds and picnic areas.

From a sketching perspective, there are views of lower Manhattan, with boats, ferries and helicopter grace notes, incredible bridge perspectives, and more buildings and windows than an Urban Sketcher could sketch in a lifetime.  Should be a great sketch location!

Note:  There are no subways that are especially nearby, and the ones I’ve highlighted on the map require you to walk downhill to get to the waterside.  (The “heights” in Brooklyn Heights are what you’ll be climbing down to get there.)

Our meeting spot at the Lighrthouse at end of Old Fulton Street

DETAILS:

WHEN:  We’ll meet at 10 AM - sketching until 3 PM on Saturday, May 27, 2023  Sleeping late?  Come anyway - we'll be there.

WHERE:  We’re sketching in the southern portion of Brooklyn Bridge Park, but we’re meeting at what is the main path into the park - Old Fulton Street.  At the end of the street you’ll see a great view of the Brooklyn Bridge.  We’re meeting by the lighthouse (see photo of our meeting spot and map #2).

For people coming late, we’ll be moving southward (towards lower Manhattan). Anyone you see sketching is probably with the group.

HOW:

Here are the subway choices.
  •  York Street - F train
  • Clark Street - 2, 3 train
  • High Street/ Brooklyn Bridge - A, C train
Or you can take the ferry from Wall Street / Pier 11
(this is the Pier at the end of Wall St.)  You get there by taking the 2, 3 train to Wall Street.  The ferry leaves at 9:35 and costs $4 from nearby vending machines.  The crossing takes ten minutes.

LUNCH12:30 PM  - Location to be determined on site.  Bring your own or purchase from the local vendors.

AFTERNOON1:30 PM  Back to sketching

SHOW AND TELL:  3 PM  We’ll probably meet by the lunch spot where we will share our sketches, tell stories, and probably talk about art supplies.

NOTE:

-  Bring a stool - it gives you more options

-  Prepare for full-on sun

New NYC Urban Sketchers Workshop with Gavin Snider

Painting Brooklyn Brownstone Workshop

On Saturday, June 17th, Gavin Snider is returning to give another exciting workshop. In this workshop, Gavin will focus on the architecture of Brooklyn, specifically the brownstone. He'll show you how he builds up a watercolor from the blank page, "carving out" the painting with increasing levels of detail. He'll talk about composing with negative space, applying light and shadow, and approaching both architectural and landscape elements in a painting.

SATURDAY: Sketch the Compromise

The dilemma when posting sketching events is that weather forecasts are not always reliable.  Saturday looked great, until it didn’t.  The current best guess for our sketch date says it’ll rain, … but honestly, will it?

Our best solution is to pick a spot that has a solid indoor solution, but also has great outdoor views if the weather cooperates.

Brookfield Place is that place, with its incomparable views of the Hudson River and the Jersey .  It also has a ferry service nearby and it’s a good place to dock your yacht.  Lots to draw from inside where it’s dry, or outside where the sun will hopefully be shining.  There are also loads of food choices and clean bathrooms.

Even if it’s raining, we’ll turn this into a sketchable day.

DETAILS:

WHEN:  We’ll meet at 10 AM, on Saturday, May 20, 2023.    Sleeping late?  Come anyway - we'll be there.

WHERE:  At Brookfield Place - 230 Vesey Street.   Meet by the huge window facing the river on the ground floor. (see map)

HOW:  There are plenty of subway choices.

BY SUBWAY (see map)

     E trains to WTC

A, C trains to Chambers St.

2, 3 trains to Park Place.

N, R trains to Cortland St.

     4, 5 to Fulton St.

LUNCH:  12:00 PM  - Bring your own or purchase from the many vendors and stores in the complex.

AFTERNOON:  1:00 PM  Back to sketching

SHOW AND TELL:  3 PM  The social part of our day - Meet by the window where we will share our sketches and tell art stories.

NOTE:

-  Bring a stool - it gives you more options

WEDNESDAY: Westchester Sketchers at Kensico Dam Plaza, Valhalla

The historic Kensico Dam was built under the old dam that formed Lake Kensico, using stone taken from the adjacent Cranberry Lake Park.  The dam was completed in 1917. It is 307 feet high and 1,843 feet long and forms the Kensico reservoir. The Rising, the county's September 11th Memorial, is located at the intersection of many pathways and viewpoints and thereby extends its presence into the surrounding landscape.

With the historic dam as a background, the Kensico Dam Plaza has many interesting scenes to sketch including fountains, the 9-11 memorial, beautiful trees, and lots of people in a scenic park setting.  Those feeling adventurous might light to climb the steep stairs or follow the brick walk-up trail to the top for a spectacular view of the Kensico Dam and Reservoir.

Looking forward to seeing you!!!
