Tuesday, July 16, 2024: Westchester and NJ Sketchers Plein Air Day at the Orangeburg Library

 

The Westchester and NJ Divisions of the NYC Urban Sketchers have teamed up with the Orangeburg Public Library to provide a fun and relaxing drawing event ‘en plein air’ (in the open air.)  This this event is meant to be an opportunity for people to relax, create art and make new friends.  There will be no formal art instruction.  Please arrive with your own supplies such as paper, drawing materials and a surface to lean on.

At 10 AM there will be a quick meet and greet in front of the Library. From there, participants will choose a spot on the lawn (or anywhere in or around the building) and begin sketching/drawing their surrounding scenery. There is a rain garden and Camp Shanks for added inspiration. The group will break for lunch at 12:30 PM to enjoy lunch indoors followed by Show and Tell to share what everyone has created.

SATURDAY: Sketch the Red Hook Waterfront

Hop on a quick ferry ride and you’re transported to a world with a small-town vibe, waterfront sketching with expansive views of the NY Harbor and Lady Liberty, fresh lobster rolls, sublime key lime pie, and the opening of an exhibition of Coney Island art that includes work by a few of our friends. 

And, if you stick around after Show ‘n’ Tell, you can even mingle with mermaids.

DETAILS:

What:   Sketch Red Hook via the NY ferry.

Question:  Do I have to get there by ferry?

Answer:  Absolutely not.  Feel free to meet us there!

Where:  The ferry leaves from Pier 11/Wall St (see map below)

When:  Be at the ferry dock in time to catch the 9:51 AM ferry. It’s 2 stops and 17 minutes total to Red Hook. (If you miss the boat, ferries run every half hour.) And don't worry about finding the others; if you see anyone sketching in Red Hook, chances are, they’re an Urban Sketcher.

How:   To get to the Wall St. ferry by subway:

· N, R, W to Cortlandt 

·  2, 3, 4, or 5 to Fulton 

· 2, 3 to Wall St.

· 4, 5 to Bowling Green 

· 1 to South Ferry 

NOTES:

NYC Urban Sketchers Workshop with Katie Woodward

Creating Layered Reflections

When and Where:

Workshop Description:

The purpose of this workshop is to simplify how we approach reflections in water into only a few simple steps. It will cover information on how reflections work, what to look for when getting started, and how to paint realistic looking reflections in water. It should demystify the water painting process and make it fun!

Required Materials:

• Water cup

• Watercolor palette and paints (whatever you usually use)

• Watercolor brushes (I use rounds in a variety of sizes but the workshop can be completed in whatever you usually use)

• Pencil

• Watercolor Paper of your choosing

• Recommended: White Uniball Signo Gel Pen or white gouache

• Stool

We will be meeting in front of the Hans Christian Andersen Statue on the west side of the Conservatory Waters. Enter the park on 72 Street, take the first path on your left. 

Workshop is scheduled for August 10. We have a rain date of August 11. As the day approaches we will assess the weather and communicate via the email address you provided at enrollment.  Weekday Sketchers at the Valentine Valerian House 

Join us this week as we travel back in time to 1758 when farm houses lined the Boston Post Road.providing easy access to the markets in NYC and travel up to Boston.  The Valentine Valeran house has been there all this time as witness to the changing landscape and growth the the city.  What we see in the neighborhood today is a far cry from the time when the house was new.  But lets let our imagination roam and capture what we see and what we imagine in our sketchbooks as we explore this corner of NYC history.

No Weekend Sketch Event

 

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY

I sometimes think the best training to be an Urban Sketching Organizer would be a solid background in weather forecasting.  My best guess is that Saturday will not work out as a good sketching day because of the expected rain and thunderstorms.  Many sketchers are also traveling and away for the long weekend.

Our plans for the following two weeks are committed.  Next week we'll be sketching in Red Hook and will also check out an art show that includes several of our friends.  Our day in Red Hook will begin with a ferry ride from lower Manhattan.  

The following week is our Annual Picnic / Holiday Party which will be at the Queens Botanical Gardens, a wonderful event at a lovely sketchable location.

WEDNESDAY, July 10, 2024; Westchester Sketchers and LHVPAP at Stonecrop Gardens, Cold Spring

 

Joint event of Westchester Sketchers and Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters hosted by Cathy Gutterman and Jami Grossman (LHVPAP)

Stonecrop Gardens is a secret treasure located in Cold Spring, New York and was originally the home of Anne and Frank Cabot. Stonecrop became a public garden in 1992 under the direction of Caroline Burgess.

Architecture and flowers and beautiful trees abound! There are a few small ponds, conservancy buildings and other interesting structures, formal and informal gardens, paths, and more. We'll find a picnic spot for those who wish to meet up for lunch.

Workshop with Gavin Snider-Painting Coney Island

Morning and Afternoon Session

July 27th with a rain date of August 3rd. 10am-1pm or 2pm-5pm

In this workshop, Gavin will take on the beach, one of his favorite (and most challenging) subjects. He'll start with light washes to capture water and sky, then demonstrate how he fills up a scene with figures, focusing less on exact details and more on color, value and negative space. He'll show you how to capture the energy of a scene by going straight to the final artwork, painting people and landscapes confidently without using pencil lines.

We will be meeeting at the West 16th Lifeguard Station. It's next to two public restrooms, and people can choose to draw from the beach, from the boardwalk, or even from the pier if they'd like.

Please read carefully and choose a morning (10am-1pm) or an afternoon (2pm-5pm) session. All the details on the workshop are in the event pages.
