Weekday Sketchers in DUMBO Thursday

There is always something new in DUMBO!

One of the latest attractions in the DUMBO/Brooklyn Bridge Park area is the Time Out Market on the roof of the old warehouses.  While this won't be our only perch for the day, it does offer great views of the river, bridge and park from an elevated balcony.  We will meet by Jane's Carousel to capture the river views, bridges and of course the carousel. Then at lunchtime we will go up to the T O Market for food, views and sketching.  After lunch, more sketching in the surrounding streets.

View from Time Out Market balcony

Rain? No problem.  We will move indoors to capture scenes inside the Empire Stores and the Market Hall.  Great opportunity to practice perspective and drawing people!

SATURDAY: Sketch Domino Park

Domino Park is a 5-acre public park in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City. It spans a quarter mile along the East River near the Williamsburg Bridge, at the site of the landmarked former Domino Sugar Refinery.

Built on the site of the former Domino Sugar Refinery, the park was designed by James Corner Field Operations, known for its work on the High Line and Cornell Tech.  The waterfront park is—like many urban open spaces these days—purpose-built for a variety of uses, all while nodding to the site’s industrial past.  (Translation:  Lots of stuff to draw, people, things and great views!)

There are elements that bring in the site’s past—notably along Artifact Walk, an elevated catwalk that stretches over five blocks. Several cranes that previously occupied the site remain, and have been painted in the park’s signature turquoise; other repurposed remnants include columns from the refinery building, and enormous tanks that were used during the refining process. (Another notable feature of the Artifact Walk: its impressive views of the Manhattan skyline.)

Elsewhere, bits and pieces of refinery equipment have been salvaged and dot the landscape, including more tanks and old screw conveyers

Maybe the most fun will be getting there.  The best way is via ferry.
(see directions and maps below - there are several alternative routes)

DETAILS

WHEN: Saturday, October 5, 2019 starting at approximately 10 AM (using the 9:45 ferry)  Sleeping late.  Common out anyway.  We'll be there sketching!

WHERE:  Domino Park in Williamsburg  (see maps below).  I'll wait at the spot that looks like the most obvious meeting place.  If you come late - anyone you see sketching will be with Urban Sketchers.

HOW:

Drive) at 9:45, 10:20, 10:41, 11:02, 11:23, 11:44.  The ferry ride costs $2.75.  You can not use your MetroCard and need to purchase a ticket.  Using the NYC Ferry’s East River route our stop is South Williamsburg (440 Kent Ave) stop.  The park is an eight minute walk, part of which is by the water.  (see maps)

By Subway:
M, J, Z to Marcy Avenue
L to Bedford Avenue
See maps for potential walking path to the park
