Weekday Sketchers at Juilliard Concert and Rubenstein Atrium Tuesday

Join us this week for a double billing. 

First we will gather at the Rubenstien Atrium, which is part of Lincoln Center.  This beautiful public space with greenery growing up the walls will give us a chance to capture people in an soaring indoor space to practice proportion and scale.  You can get coffee and food in the atrium.  

Next we will walk to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for Juilliard's Ancient Instrument Concert at noon.  What could be better than listening to beautiful music while sketching the musicians in a spectacular Gothic setting?

Plenty of chairs wherever we go.  You are welcome to join for either part of the program or both.  Please note that if you come only for the concert it starts promptly at noon.  Dry materials only in the church. 

There will be no formal lunch break.  You can grab a bite to eat before leaving the atrium for the church or have lunch following the concert at 1:00.   Following the concert we will gather in the church lobby for a quick "throw down". You can then return to the atrium or go to the American Craft Museum on Broadway and 66th St for an afternoon of drawing.

SATURDAY: Sketch the New Hunters Point Library

Is it an architectural Masterpiece, or a Disaster!  Let's decide this Saturday when we visit New York City's newest public library, located on one of the most scenic spots in our town.




The New York Times architecture critic said, "Why Can’t New York City Build More Gems Like This Queens Library?  The Hunters Point Community Library is one of the finest public buildings New York has produced this century. But it cost more than $40 million, took a decade and almost died."

You'll form your own opinion as we sketch the stunning Manhattan views.

HOW:   7 train to Vernon Blvd–Jackson Avenue.  Or the  G to 21 Street.

-   LIRR Montauk, Oyster Bay, and Port Jefferson lines.

-   Driving? Parking can be tough in LIC, Here’s a lot that really close. Icon parking 45-45 Center Blvd.



LUNCH:  1:00pm – Will decide upon arrival and spread the word. There are several supermarkets and restaurants ½ block away, or bring your own. The 7 subway stop has tons of eateries nearby, maybe pick something on your way in.

AFTERNOON:  1:30 PM - Back to sketching at the library.

SHOW and TELL:  3 PM. We will scout out a space in the Library for the social part of our day.

SUNDAY: Westchester Sketchers at Hudson Valley MOCA

Current exhibition: How We Live

How does production, from household items to artistic creation, become a product itself of the lived experience? Moving past depictions of the human form, How We Live uses sculpture and video to explore the products and production of humanity across a multitude of geographies, cultures, and times, through works by acclaimed artists like Dan Flavin, Claes Oldenburg, and Yu Honglei.

WEEKAY SKETCHERS AT CAST HALL WEDNESDAY

The Institute of Classical Architecture and Art holds a collection of casts of ancient statues, artifacts and decorative building elements.  Housed in a sunlit room in the Mechanics and Tradesmen's Building where we can get close to these works to draw and paint (yes, wet materials are allowed). 

The building itself offers multiple opportunities for sketching from the stained glass and unusual sculpture in the lobby to the beautiful staircases a railings. The building also houses a Lock Museum with a lock dating back to 4000 BCE.  You and access for a small entrance fee through the Mechanics and Tradesmen library on the first floor. 

No need to bring a stool. Tables and chairs will be provided.  We will be able to eat our lunch in the room so bring along your lunch or snacks.

We're meeting on Sunday this week.  (The day before I'll be supporting my wife and daughter  marching in NYC, ... if the predicted snow storm cooperates.)

The main branch of the NY Public Library is one of my favorite buildings.  It's a visual treat both inside and outside and is filled with the Beaux-Arts details that are so much fun to sketch.

Some Library facts for you.
-   It was officially opened in 1911
-   Up to that time it was the largest marble structure in the United States
-   The main reading room was contemporaneously the largest of its kind in the world (You can't quite see the curvature of the earth but there are lots of perspective challenges to work out.)

NYC Urban Sketchers at the Hudson River Museum

Current exhibitions include:

James McElhinney: Discover the Hudson Anew presents the painter’s sketch books and prints related to the River in a comprehensive showing for the first time. A video program, animating turning pages, will allow visitors to see additional sketchbook paintings.
· Bring an orange pen.
· Look closely at how James McElhinney uses the orange pen and try it for yourself.
· Weather permitting we could go outside. If not, there is a good view from the Hudson Riverama exhibit on the lower level. Sketch the river by trying to replicate James' technique and color palette.

Thomas Cole’s Refrain: The Paintings of Catskill Creek This exhibit features 12 original oil paintings by Thomas Cole, regarded as founder of the Hudson River School of Art, as well as works by several other 19-century artists inspired by him, including Frederic Edwin Church, Asher B. Durand, and Charles Herbert Moore.

NOTE: Sketching in this gallery is not permitted, but don't miss the chance to see these wonderful paintings.

Weekday Sketchers Gets on Board Trains on Thursday

Join us for a day of sketching and riding trains.  We will start the day by sketching the Annual Holiday Exhibit at Grand Central's Transit Museum. Then board the train for a scenic ride along the Hudson River to Yonkers where we will join the Westchester sketchers for an afternoon at the Hudson River Museum.

New York Transit Museum’s Grand Central Gallery plays host to a city within a city with the display of a miniature electric railroad running over, through, and beneath some of New York’s most magnificent landmarks. This year’s exhibit is set against a mural designed by cartoonist Julia Wertz.

-Returning to Grand Central, trains run every 1/2 hour. Take any train back the works with your schedule. 

- Admission $8 for seniors, $5 for seniors. The Hudson Museum accepts the American Alliance of Museum membership card. 

-We will not be able to use stools at the model trains.  Stools will be available for our use at the museum,

SATURDAY: Sketch the Museum of Natural History

The Holiday crush is hopefully over and our museums have returned to their normal bustling state.  Natural History might be my favorite museum place to sketch.  So much to see, and because it's family oriented there are lots of people sketching too.

Special events this Saturday include the Origami Holiday Tree and the T.Rex: The Ultimate Predator exhibits

Akeley Hall of African Mammals.

DETAILS

WHEN: This Saturday, January 4, 2020 starting at 10:00 AM.

WHERE: The American Museum of Natural History, 200 Central Park West.  

SUGGESTION:   Enter the museum from the 81st entrance instead of the main entrance on Central Park West.  It's less cr
owded, has shorter lines and a coat check that is less crowded.

MEET AT:  We'll meet on the second floor in the Akeley Hall of African Mammals.  This is the room that features a heard of elephants.

Subway: Take the C to 81st Street.
Two blocks west of the Museum, the 1 train stops at Broadway and West 79th Street.

ADMISSION
The American Museum of Natural History has a suggested admission price. This pay-what-you-wish option is only available on-site at the ticket counters

Weekday Sketchers at NY Public Library January 8th.

Can you do it?  Capture the iconic NYPL in your sketchbook?  So much detail: the arches, murals,  reading rooms, and scissored staircases are just starters. But you're an Urban Sketcher so it will be a snap.  Don't want to work indoors, no problem. Weather permitting, go outside to the skating rink and marketplace and capture the essences of the season. OR,  get a sketch of Patience and Fortitude all decked out for the Holidays.
