Saturday 1/17/26: Weekend Sketchers at The American Museum of Natural History

Opened in 1871, The American Museum of Natural History is a standout among NYC’s long list of museums, and a favorite winter sketching spot for the group. With over 32 million specimens housed in 2.5 million square feet, there is no shortage of things to sketch…and the best part is that they all stand still just waiting for you to capture them...in your sketchbooks!

HOST: Sonia Idelsohn (914) 522-6584

DATE: Saturday 1/17/26

TIME: Sketching 10am - 3pm | Show and Tell beginning at 3pm.

SKETCHING LOCATION: AMNH- Enter through the Gilder Center Entrance at Columbus Ave and 79th St for the fastest route to the meeting spot. The official address of the museum is 200 Central Park West, NY, NY.

MEETING LOCATION/ SHOW AND TELL LOCATION:  The new Gilder Center entrance atrium will serve as our home base. There will be a meet-up with the host at 10am in the atrium. We will do the Show and Tell there on the auditorium-style seating at 3:00. It shouldn't be crowded at that time, but always check with the host day-of to confirm the exact show and tell location.

VENUE RULES: Pay what you wish for NY State residents, out of state is $30, $24 for seniors. The site says no tripods, but I can’t find any restrictions on art supplies. As always, please listen to the guards. We want to be good stewards of the places we visit, and we want to be welcomed back with open arms.

FOOD, DRINK, RESTROOMS, SEATING: There are restrooms, cafes, a cafeteria, and assorted seating sprinkled throughout the museum. A stool always gives you more sketching options.

ABOUT NYC URBAN SKETCHING EVENTS: All are welcome, no fee, no registration. Just look for folks with sketchbooks and say hello. If you have trouble finding us, contact the host; their contact info is in the NYC Urban Sketchers blog post for this event.  #nycurbansketchers.
