Grab your art gear and let’s travel online through New England, exploring landscapes filled with vibrant fall foliage, farms, villages and covered bridges. Of all the places on earth, fall in New England may be one of the most colorful. The region was made for the autumn season, and every fall activity you could dream of can be found here, with a backdrop of brilliant foliage.

Traveling through New England in search of autumn’s changing colors has become so popular it has sprouted its own subculture of “leaf-peepers”. Let’s immerse ourselves in the fall harvest spirit with the ultimate Virtual New York City Urban Sketchers online road trip. Leaf peepers flock to Vermont , New Hampshire, Maine and parts of Massachusetts to see the sugar maples, ash, birch, beech, dogwood, tulip tree, oak and sassafras trees that contribute to the kaleidoscope of autumn color.

Untapped New York ran a wonderful article about Victorian Flatbush (https://untappedcities.com/2021/09/28/mansions-victorian-flatbush-brooklyn/).  For an Urban Sketcher it was impossible not to become enthused about this neighborhood.

"Once home to acres of colonial Dutch farmland, Flatbush is now an area of Brooklyn known for boasting some of the most magnificent and diverse architecture in New York City. Flatbush’s architectural splendor can be attributed to the development boom it experienced in the late 19th and early 20th-centuries. At that time, a slew of real estate developers bought up farmland in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn and constructed residential suburban neighborhoods. This boom was spurred by many factors, including new transportation lines that connected the borough to Manhattan, the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883, and the opening of Prospect Park in 1867.'

What:  We’ll be sketching beautiful residential homes in the South Flatbush section of Brooklyn.  All the houses in the area are interesting, we created a map that highlights some of the really sketch able places (see map and list below)

Where:  Our host for the day is Amanda Kavanagh.  We will meet at her house at 155 Argyle Rd, which is two blocks from the subway station

When:  Start time - 10 AM.   Running late?  Messed up by the subways?  Come anyway - we'll be there.

How:
-   By Subway:  Take the Q train to Beverly Road.  See the map (below) for directions to Amanda’s

Lunch:  We'll break at 12:00​ PM​.  Location to be determined.  Bring your own or rely on the stores in Church Avenue which is two blocks away

Afternoon:  1:00​ PM​  Back to sketching

Show and Tell:  3:00 PM - Location to be determined.

NOTE:
-      Bring a hat (for the sun - hopefully!)
-      Bring a stool if you have one, it gives you more options.  There are no benches.

SATURDAY - America’s Historic Seaside Resorts - Cape May and Ocean Grove

Grab your favorite art supplies and let’s sketch - The Painted Ladies of Cape May and Ocean Grove. America’s historic seaside resorts are a treasure trove of colorful Victorian architecture with elaborate mansions and ornate guest houses. The Victorian era is made up of various architectural styles including Queen Anne, Gothic revival, Italianate, and French Second Empire.

Cape May, is the oldest seaside resort, and is named after Cornelius Jacobson Mey, a Dutch sea captain who explored the coast in 1621. But Cape May really came into its own after the War of 1812, with the popularity of the steamboat. The Historic District spans 380 acres with over 600 buildings within the resort town.

Ocean Grove was founded in 1869 when a group of Methodist clergymen formed the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association to develop a summer camp meeting site. Visitors to this historic city will notice “Tent City”, a colony of canvas structures available to rent in the summer, a tradition that goes back to 1870. However, don’t hold your breath to get a canvas cottage - the waiting list is 10 years long.

 Weekday Sketcher at the Brooklyn Promenade and Brooklyn Heights

If you have never been to the Brooklyn Promenade you have been missing one of the best views of lower Manhattan, The Brooklyn Bridge, Governor's Island and the Statue of Liberty.  The view from the East River provides a sight line to many iconic buildings and the waterfront piers and boats at South Street Seaport. Not enough for you? Wander the beautiful antique neighborhood behind the promenade with stately Brownstones, slate sidewalks and overarching trees.

STARTING TIME: 10:30 AM

LOCATION:  THE BROOKLYN PROMENADE AT MONTAGUE STREET 

TRANSPORTATION:  N, R,W Train to Court Street, 2, 3 to Clark Street 4, 5 to Brough Hall. Exit the stations and walk west to the river. 

NOTES

• There is seating along the Promenade but you might want to have a stool for sketching in the neighborhood
• There are bathrooms available 
• Bring lunch or purchase food at the many markets and restaurants in the neighborhood.

DETAILS
What:  Sketch DUMBO ((Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass))

Where: We'll meet at Washington Street at the corner of Water Street in DUMBO.

When:  Start time - 10 AM.   Running late?  Messed up by the subways?  Come anyway - we'll be there.

How:
-   By Subway:  It's about a ten minute walk downhill from all the subway choices.

A/C train to High Street,

Exit onto Cadman Plaza West. Walk left, toward the overhead highway; the street changes name to Old Fulton Street. Walk down the hill and bear left as you approach the East River. Continue on Fulton to DUMBO's Front Street to get a sense of the neighborhood. Make a left at Washington Street and walk one block towards the river to Water Street.  That corner is our meeting spot. (see map).

2/3 train to Clark Street,

Take the Henry Street exit. Walk left on Henry Street. Go left on Cadman Plaza West/Old Fulton Street and walk downhill to the entrance to Brooklyn Bridge Park, located at the bottom of the hill, at the waterfront.  From there proceed to Water and Washington streets (see map).

F train to York Street,

Special Treat:

Take the ferry at Wall Street / Pier 11 which cuts across the East River and deposits you in DUMBO eight minutes later.  Weekend ferries leave every 35 minutes. Fares for passengers are $2.75

Lunch:  We'll break at 12:15 to purchase lunch - or bring  your own. We'll meet at 12:30 for a picnic lunch at a shady spot in the vicinity of Jane's Carousel.

Show and Tell:  3:00 PM - Outdoors in the park.  We'll meet near our lunch spot by the carousel where we'll share drawing and tell stories about our art exploits, and who knows, maybe we'll even discuss art materials.

Weekday Sketchers on Little Island

Can you imagine being able to build an island in the Hudson River and then load it up with beautiful trees, paths, an amphitheater. an outdoor food court, fun things to do, like a keyboard built into the floor and optical illusions spinning in space.  Well you don't have to imagine it.  It is here!  

Join us this week as we explore the newest piece of real estate in NYC.  Come to Little Island and spend the day experiencing this most unusual place, its landscaping and all the people coming and going up and down the hills and trails.

NOTES

• Little Island is at the western end of 14th Street near the Whitney Museum.
• Entrance is free and unrestricted before noon.  If you come after noon you must make a reservation on line.
• There are bathrooms and a food concession on the island but you can bring your own lunch and drinks.
• Bring a stool as there are some but not many benches.
