World Wide SketchCrawl #41
and New York City Urban Sketchers

From Castles to Collections:

- Our Sketch starts at 10  AM at the observation deck of Belvedere Castle. Built as a Victorian folly in 1869, the castle caps Vista Rock, the park's second-highest natural elevation. Since 1919, the castle has also been the location of the official Central Park weather station.

The Romeo and Juliet Statue at the Delacorte Theater

- From there we go to the entrance to Central Parks Delacorte Theater to sketch the statue of Romeo and Juliet

- Then we'll sketch the view at the Turtle Pond looking up at the Castle.

- Then across the Great Lawn to the Statue of King Jagiello,

and from there to

Cleopatra's Needle behind the Metropolitan Museum.

We'll finish up on Fifth Avenue sketching the iconic museum entrance and stairs.

Sketching Astoria Park

What a great park and what a beautiful day.  Set between two bridges with a wonderful view of the water.

Turn in one direction and you're looking up at the Triboro Bridge with a dramatic perspective

Turn in the other direction and you're looking at the Hellsgate Bridge

The second drawing uses a bleeding walnut colored ink tinted with watercolor.

Astoria Park

My first sketch of the day, sitting not quite under the Triboro bridge.

The view of the Hells Gate Bridge and the East River.

The last sketch of the day. This was the walkway that ran   parallel to the river.

Today we met at Astoria Park in Queens. There were 9 of us sketching today. Our first sketching location was along the side of the RFK Bridge right outside the entrance to Astoria Park.

Susan, Ben, Mark, and I had a good view of the bridge from below.

Here is my first sketch.

And my sketch of Mark at his easel.

We moved further into the park. We had a good view of the RFK Bridge.

I sketched a similar view.

The view of the Hell's Gate Bridge was really good too.

Of course a sketching day must include lunch. We went to Agnani, a great Greek restaurant
at 19-06 Ditmars Blvd. They treated us really well and the food was delicious.
After lunch a few of us went back to the park to sketch.
I liked these trees along the river side of the park with all the people walking and jogging.

It turned out to be a great day!

Sketching at the Hester Street Fair

I met up with the group for the second time, arriving just like Mark on a Citi bike, to a quiet and peaceful pocket of Manhattan with Tai Chi classes going on in neighboring Seward Park.

From the rear of the Hester Street Fair looking back towards the entrance
Sitting, drawing, eating, talking about trees, and how the London Planes are everywhere, but with a personality at the Fair.

London Plane Tree and its buddy the garbage can

I was really intrigued by Seward Park and this large circle in the center, so I went around the corner from the fair. I saw a little kid throwing a brick at the tree, repeatedly and laughing hysterically, probably trying to shake it so the leaves would trickle down. I told him he was hurting the tree and he took out a band-aid and almost put it on the bark! Just when I thought this kid might be kind of sadistic he turned out to be really kind. His mom and I, laughing, explained that the tree will be fine without the band-aid. Fun experience in Seward Park.
