THURSDAY: Westchester Sketchers at the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, NY

 The Hudson River Museum is a preeminent cultural institution in Westchester County and the New York metropolitan area.  Situated on the banks of the Hudson River in Yonkers, New York, the HRM’s mission is to engage, inspire, and connect diverse communities through the power of the arts, sciences, and history.

Current exhibitions include:

Frederick J. Brown: A Drawing in Five Parts

This exhibition features Brown’s series of five monumental works on paper titled The Actress: A Drawing in Five Parts, a recent gift to the Museum. The series explores the emotive progression of a stage performance by actor Jillian O’Brien. Homing in on Brown’s interests in Black expression, performance, and creativity, this exhibition turns a lens on his unique, experimental, and powerful practice of portraiture.

Matrix: Prints by Women Artists, 1960–1990

Printmaking has served as a stepping stone for many women artists, enabling their work to reach the masses thanks to its accessible form. Matrix: Prints by Women Artists, 1960–1990 explores a period of experimentation in printmaking among women artists, who used the art form as a means of creative expression and also a way to enter the male-dominated art market.

Federico Uribe: Plastic Reef

Federico Uribe’s Plastic Reef reminds us of the fragility of life and invites us to reflect on the indiscriminate use of plastic and its disastrous impact. From a distance, Plastic Reef appears to be a colorful and beautiful underwater world filled with corals, mussels, and schools of fish. Up close, you discover it is, in fact, thousands of pieces of upcycled plastic that are carefully cut and whimsically arranged. Weaving together these discarded plastic bottles, caps, cutlery, flip flops, and more in curious and unpredictable ways, Uribe presents his vision of a coral reef and its interdependent life forms.

Optional: Gilded Age Glenview: Historic House Tour at 1 PM  

Travel back in time to the Gilded Age!  Enjoy a 45-minute guided tour of historic Glenview’s six fully restored period rooms decorated for the holidays.  Advance tickets are strongly encouraged.

From NYC: Take the Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line local train to Glenwood Station. Walk 1 block east on Glenwood Avenue, and then turn left onto Ravine Avenue. At the end of Ravine Avenue, enter Trevor Park. Follow the path to the main entrance of the Museum.

START TIME: 12:00 PM (Opening time)

LUNCH: Since the Museum opens at Noon, we won’t have a scheduled time for lunch. Please bring your own lunch/snack, or purchase something from the Museum Shop.

SHOW and TELL: 2:30 PM A classroom has been reserved for us from 2:30-5 PM. This is the social portion of our day when we will share our drawings, techniques, and stories. It is a time not to be missed.

NOTES:

• Admission: $10 for Adults, $7 for Seniors. Free for members. Tickets are available for purchase online or at (914) 963-4550 during business hours. Tickets are non-refundable.  Reservations are accepted by credit card only.
• Tickets for Glenview tours and planetarium shows are an additional purchase and are not included in general admission.  Adults +$6 each; Seniors +$5 each.
• Stools will be available for our use.
•  DRY MATERIALS ONLY (in the Galleries). Wet materials may be used in the classroom.

Weekday Sketchers on the 2nd Ave Subway

The art work on the mezzanine level of the new 2nd Ave Subway stations is worth the trip from anywhere! And this week we will be making the trip and sketching the stations. 

We will meet at the 96th Street Station on the Mezzanine Level of the Q Train.  We will sketch for 40 minutes and get then ride to the next stop and so on and so on down to the 63rd Street Station. .  Bring a stool and your lunch.  Bathrooms should be available at all stations.

In this workshop, Gavin will teach you how to capture the energy of a scene by going straight to the final artwork, painting architecture and people confidently without pencil lines. His workshop will focus on building a painting from light to dark, using value to capture detail and motion.

New Jersey Sketchers at the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts....Again!

Museum of Early Trades and Crafts

In January we visited this lovely museum to sketch the heavily decorated interior.  At that time we said...let's come back and sketch the outside of the building as well.  Now it is time to return and make it happen. 

Join us for a day of sketching at the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts. The museum is in the James Library Building. Built in 1899, this is a fine example of Richardsonian Romanesque Revival architecture.

While our objective is to sketch the exterior of this Victorian confection, there is plenty to do on the inside should the weather call for a cooler or drying place.

Public parking lots are located behind the shops on both sides of Main Street. On-street parking is available on Kings Road and Green Village Road.

SATURDAY: Sketch Southeby's

The famed international auction house is the site for our Saturday sketch this week.  You'll be surrounded by beautiful objects and interesting customers.  The displays are on many floors and the collection of items to be auctioned always changes.  There's always something fabulous to sketch at Sotheby’s.  The staff at Sotheby's has always been warm and welcoming to urban sketching.  

You will almost certainly see something that will get your creative juices going.  By the way, if Joan Tavolott joins us, be sure to ask her about the time she sold her original art at Sotheby's.  It’s one of my favorite art stories.

What:   We'll be sketching at the Sotheby's on Saturday, January 21, 2023

Where:   Sotheby's is located at 1334 York Ave, between East 71 St and 72nd.

 

When:  Meet at 10 AM on the ground floor..  There's a coat check.  After that we'll be fanning out to the different floors and collections. Anyone with a sketchbook is undoubtedly a fellow Urban Sketcher

How:

-   By Subway:  

• The East 72 Street stop on the Q line is the closest subway stop.

Admission to Sotheby's is free.

Lunch:  Meet at the Sotheby's cafeteria at 12:30 for lunch. Bring your sketchbook. The views are wonderful.  If the weather permits there's also an outdoor terrace we can enjoy

Afternoon:  1:30 PM  Back to sketching

Show and Tell:  3:00 PM - This is the social part of our day where we will share drawings and good stories.  Location to be determined.

Weekday Sketchers at St. Barts and Central Synagogue

Join us this week as we visit two iconic houses of worship in Mid Manhattan.    

Central Synagogue Exterior 

We will start our journey at St. Bartholomew's Church on Park Avenue, designed by Stanford White in the Romanesque Style, this is one of the most beautiful houses of worship in New York City.  Beautiful mosaics designed by Hildreth Meiere , a soaring dome, the triple marble porch and heavily painted interior make this church an architectural treasure. Then we will walk to the Central Synagogue on Lexington Avenue which was built in the Moorish Style and completely restored after a devastating fire, it is a tribute to this unique style of architecture from the onion domes and stained glass to the elaborately embellished interior covered in scroll work, lattice and patterns painted in 69 different colors.   For information about the architecture click here: https://www.centralsynagogue.org/about-us/our-history/our-sanctuary
