Sketch Ayres-Knuth Farm

We have been invited to participate in a larger awareness building event for the Ayres-
Knuth Farm!

Ayres-Knuth Farm is a working farm, operated continuously since first settled, is one of
the most complete examples of a 19th century agricultural complex in Morris County.

The 50-acre property includes 10 original buildings, perfect for sketching!

The farm is participating in the NJ Pathways to History Tour on Saturday, October 4. Activities for the day include artists working on the grounds and a pop-up art show and sale focused on nature inspired artwork.

There are no fees for the artists working on the grounds. The only thing the farm requests is a donation if you make sales (suggested donation is 10% of sales up to $35 per artist). Donations will help raise funds to create permanent bathrooms at the farm as their long-term goal is to be an event space.

Whether you choose to just to sketch or opt to sell your work as well, let’s join other

artists to help boost awareness of this great farm!

TIME: The event runs from noon to 5 pm, and you may come for however long you’d like during this time period. We will have a NJ Urban Sketcher lead (Marlene) there between 2 – 4pm.

10/3 Friday NJ Sketchers at Cooper Pond

  

Sketch Cooper Pond

This tranquil pond is a popular spot for wedding and graduation photos with its gazebo and historic mill building. Many locals come by everyday. And the geese love it.

Besides the mill, there’s a museum and buildings from when there was a chair factory. It’s an easy walk around the pond with benches and shady areas with plenty of views.

Saturday September 27 Sketch Oyster Bay

 

A wonderful day planned and coordinated by Suzala​

Oyster Bay is a charming fishing village from the 1800s located on the North Shore of Long Island. It has 30 sites on the Historic Preservation List, all accessible in a one-mile loop. You can sketch views of ships moored in the harbor, palatial estates on a peninsula across the water, and a main street with a New England small-town vibe, conveniently located less than a block from the LIRR Station. Theodore Roosevelt had his office right on that main drag. The waterfront is a block away in the other direction, with beautiful views of Oyster Bay Harbor on the Long Island Sound. 

A LITTLE BACKGROUND HISTORY: 
Named “Oyster Bay” by the Dutch for its abundance of shellfish, many of the bay’s European settlers became shell fishermen.  By the 1800s, oysters had become the main source of protein for New Yorkers, more so than beef. Oyster carts replaced hot dog carts and the poor fed their families with heaping buckets of shellfish that they gathered from beaches themselves. While still a prosperous source for oysters, the sound is also home to many large, beautiful estates and if you know where to look, you can see Billy Joel's as-of-yet-to-be-sold compound directly across the way.

DETAILS: 
When:  Approximately 10:00 AM
Getting there:  Take the train to Oyster Bay from either Penn Station or Grand Central on the Long Island Railroad. Pro tip: It’s less expensive if your purchase a round-trip ticket before you board the train. The train leaves from Grand Central at 8:10 AM and from Penn Station at 8:17 AM and arrives in Oyster Bay at 9:43 AM. (Please note: Trains leave every two hours, so the next train won’t be leaving NYC until 10:10 AM.)

Where: We’ll meet at the Gazebo in Audrey Avenue Park, located on Audrey Avenue and Shore Avenue in Oyster Bay. If you make the train that arrives at 9:43 AM, Suzala’s husband, Rick will be at the station (white beard and red glasses) to direct sketchers. Look for other sketchers on the platform, as well. It'll be a short walk to the meeting place.

Lunch:  12:15: Meet back at the gazebo. Bring your own or rely on the local stores and restaurants. “Do NOT leave town without a visit to the Bonanza Ices Stand,” advises Suzala. Besides serving legendary Italian Ices for 5 generations, it’s a down-and-dirty place for hot dogs and steak fries; wooden picnic tables are located in the rear.  Also recommended is South Down, a coffee shop on the South side of Shore Avenue known for locally roasted beans: great coffee and a bathroom!  Other options include a Chinese takeout joint on South, a Peruvian restaurant, and a Mexican establishment. Tabbys on Shore Ave is also good for diner food or a burger. 

Afternoon:  1:00: Back to sketching.

Show and Tell: time to be determined  Meet back at the Gazebo.

Getting home: Return trains leave the Oyster Bay station at 2:37, 4:37 , 6:37 for Grand Central and  Penn Station

After years of reconstruction Wagner Park is now open!

Join us this week as we explore this newly renovated park.  Construction has taken years but now the park has been rendered safe from rising waters.  The park offers great harbor views and interesting sculptures to capture in our sketch books.  Wander a bit north to the South Cove and climb to the observation deck above the cove. Or perch on a boulder and sketch the bollards and trellis.

Sunday September 21 Sketch The Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum, located in the heart of Brooklyn, New York, is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the United States. Established in 1895, it boasts an extensive collection of over 1.5 million works, ranging from ancient Egyptian masterpieces to contemporary art. The museum’s Beaux-Arts building, designed by the renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead & White, is a landmark in its own right, reflecting the grandeur and ambition of its founders. 

Getting there:

By subway: During normal service, take the 2 or 3 to Eastern Parkway–Brooklyn Museum. Transfer to 2/3 from 4/5 at Nevins Street and B, D, Q, N, R, and LIRR at Atlantic Terminal–Barclays Center

By bus: The closest bus stops are B41 and B69 at Grand Army Plaza and B45 at St. Johns Place and Washington Avenue

Parking:

On-site parking is available in the lot behind the Museum, off Washington Avenue, via GGMC Parking. Street parking may be found along Eastern Parkway, Washington Avenue, and other side streets.

SATURDAY, September 20, 2025: Westchester Sketchers at Herb Fair and Market at Caramoor in Katonah

 

The Westchester Sketchers have been invited by the New York Unit of he Herb Society of America to help celebrate their 74th Herb Fair & Market at Caramoor in Katonah.  This big annual event filled with wonderful activities and opportunities to celebrate herbs, nature, and community.  We can sketch the activities as well as the Caramoor grounds and architecture.
