WORKSHOP: Merek's - San Gimignano in Ink with Two Colours!

 

A warm color, a cool color and some Ink, ... and that's it?   Incredible!!!

 10 AM ET - ​SUNDAY, MARCH 20, 2022

In this workshop, you will create artwork in ink and watercolour using our photo of San Gimignano as inspiration; you will learn how to correct photo elements that can be improved upon, establish clear values, ink lines using waterproof ink, then paint in watercolour using mainly two colours. You will produce a final artwork characterized by a pleasant composition, logical values, and harmonized colours. And, of course, I hope you’ll have fun doing that!   - Marek Badzynski

March 2022

Something to look forward to!

It is always good to look forward and plan for the future, including attending the weekly meetings of the Weekday NYC Urban Sketchers Group.  Keep your Wednesdays reserved,  as all of our gatherings will be on a Wednesday.....it just keeps things simple!

While we will be indoors for March, once the weather warms up we will be moving outdoors. Some of the planned activities include: the Bronx Zoo, The NY Botanic Gardens, Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters, Snug Harbor on Staten Island and the Chinese Scholars Garden, Grant's Tomb, the Noguchi Museum and Socrates Park and the newly installed "zoo" on Park Avenue.  There will also be a few Cherry Blossom weeks in April as well as planned joint activities with the Westchester group. 

So keep your Wednesdays reserved for Urban Sketchers and watch for announcements on where and when to meet.

One Week 100 People 

One Week 100 People is This Week!  Let's get sketching!

Marc Toro Holmes and Liz Steel have organized a world wide challenge to sketch 100 people in one week.  Maybe we will meet the goal, maybe not but trying is all the fun.... and in NYC you can't complain about lack of subject matter!

Subways, streets, parks, restaurants, out the window, in your building....they're all over the place. And one nice place to sit and sketch them is indoors at the Essex Market.  Recently opened in a new building on Delancey Street, this indoor market and food hall replaces the WPA era buildings along Essex Street.  Up graded, posh, and chocked full of food from around the world, people will be shopping, eating, hanging out and passing time.  Let's get them into our sketches.

THURSDAY: Westchester Sketchers at Hudson River Museum

The Hudson River Museum is a preeminent cultural institution in Westchester County and the New York metropolitan area.  Situated on the banks of the Hudson River in Yonkers, New York, the HRM’s mission is to engage, inspire, and connect diverse communities through the power of the arts, sciences, and history.

The World of Frida celebrates the culture, style, and persona of visionary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907–1954), who continues to inspire with her story of love, loss, and incredible bravery.

Featuring works of art by more than seventy-five national and international artists practicing in a variety of media, the exhibition includes Frida Kahlo as subject as well as pieces inspired by her life and art, her beautiful garden, Mexican culture and fashion, vibrant colors, surrealism, and more.

From NYC: Take the Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line local train to Glenwood Station. Walk 1 block east on Glenwood Avenue, and then turn left onto Ravine Avenue. At the end of Ravine Avenue, enter Trevor Park. Follow path to the main entrance of the Museum.

START TIME: 12:00 PM (Opening time)

LUNCH: Since the Museum opens at Noon, we won’t have a scheduled time for lunch. Please bring your own lunch/snack, or purchase something from the Museum Shop.

SHOW and TELL: 2:30 PM A classroom has been reserved for us from 2:30-5 PM. This is the social portion of our day when we will share our drawings, techniques, and stories. It is a time not to be missed.

• VACCINATION Required for Entry. All visitors 12+ must show proof of full vaccination or a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of visit; those 18+ must also show proof of identity.
• FACE MASKS are required indoors.

Workshop: Uma Kelkar - Flower Power

 

Some artists seem to have the ability to make anything they touch look beautiful.  

Uma is one of those people - she's amazing.   

She is a very popular teacher at our International Symposiums, 

and this is a great opportunity to learn from a real pro.  

On Sunday March 13th in her 3 hour online class, urban sketcher and plein air artist Uma Kelkar will turn to still life painting of flowers. Painting flowers or nature at large is about managing edge strength within the shape - from soft to hard. Since softness in watercolors is directly dictated by wetness of paper, this class will teach how to analyze the composition and come up with a sequence of parts to be painted so that the edges commingle to form a pleasing bouquet. Class will also inject some color theory for harmony.

Weekday Sketchers Are Back with a Double Header!

It has been a long, long winter: cold, dark, snowy and no Urban Sketchers. But we have made it through the winter and the Omicron epidemic and now we are back to meeting and drawing together. 

We are starting up the Weekday group with two events this week!

One in Brooklyn and one in Westchester with the Westchester Group.

Wednesday: Brooklyn Museum

It is almost a shame that the Brooklyn Museum is in New York City where it is overshadowed by the Manhattan museums, because it is a world class museum all on its own. From the Rodin statues in the lobby to the Dutch homes on the top floor, this museum has so much to offer us: the world class Egyptian and Asian Collections, Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party, wonderful design and decorative arts and so much more. Then there are the special exhibits to wow us all over again. Join us for a day of exploring this treasure of New York.

START TIME: 11:00 AM (the Museum opens at 11:00 AM)

LOCATION:  The Brooklyn Museum
                       200 Eastern Parkway

TRANSPORTATION: 2 or 3 train to Eastern Parkway/ Brooklyn Museum

• We will gather in the lobby at 11:00 AM. After a few minutes we will disburse to sketch at our leisure. 
•  We will meet again in the café at 1:30 PM for lunch and a show and tell. You are welcome to stay on for afternoon sketching on your own.
• There is an admission charge of $10 for Seniors and $16 for “Juniors”. However there is a pay-what-you-wish policy. The American Alliance of Museum card is accepted. It is suggested that you purchase tickets in advance but there are tickets available at the door.
• There is limited food service in the café.
• Bring a Stool.
• Be prepared to work with dry materials.

Thursday: Hudson River Museum

Cathy Gutterman has made arrangements for the Westchester Chapter to visit the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers. The Weekday Group is invited to join for a day of sketching at this wonderful gem of a museum just north of NYC. It is only a 30 minute ride on the Metro North Railroad’s Hudson Line out of Grand Central Terminal. There is also ample parking if you wish to drive. The current exhibition is “The World of Frieda” a collection of works about Frieda Kahlo. Additionally the museum houses an interesting permanent collection including Red Grooms’ “The Bookstore” and the historic Glenview Home. Weather permitting, there are good views of the Hudson River from the museum grounds.

“Curvilinear” perspective, fisheye perspective, wide angle, POV --whatever you like to call it-- sketches that use curved lines to capture one’s whole field of view are a fun but challenging way to approach urban sketching. It can definitely feel a bit confusing when you’re trying it for the first time. This workshop will take some of the mystery out of the process and help give you a more solid footing when you venture out into the world to try it yourself.

I like the term “umbrella perspective” to describe curvilinear perspective sketching. If you can draw an umbrella, you can draw in a fisheye perspective. Whether you are trying to capture a tall building, a row of short shops along a long street, or the interior of a coffee shop, thinking of the shape of an umbrella can help you introduce curves and wide angles in your sketches in a way that makes sense and doesn’t require a vast technical knowledge of perspective.

Through a few demonstrations and exercises my workshop will take students through using just one “umbrella” in a sketch to combine three or more to make a spherical world and help them understand ideas like scale relationships, foreshortening, economizing visual information and use of sighting to hone their sketches.
