THURSDAY July 20: Westchester Sketchers at Cold Spring Waterfront

 

 Join us along the beautiful waterfront area in Cold Spring.  

Jamie Grossman and Cathy Gutterman are hosting this joint paintout/sketch event for 

LHVPAP and the Westchester NYC Urban Sketchers.  

Cold Spring is located 50 miles north of Manhattan at scenic on the Hudson River.  It is a rural area steeped in history and rich in visual sketchable scenes.  We will be sketching the waterfront area and town.  There are incredible peaceful river views, scenic streets with antique shops, clothing stores, coffee houses and so much more.  Main Street is about five blocks long and features many well-preserved 19th-century buildings.  By the waterfront, you will have a view of the Hudson River north and south, the north end of West Point, the marina, and the streets and buildings that flank the waterfront.

When:  Thursday, July 20, 2023.

Start time: 10:00 AM.  Sleeping late?  Come anytime dawn to dusk.

Where:  Cold Spring, NY -  Meet by Cold Spring Gazebo (Water St. and Main St.)

There is a municipal parking lot located on Fair Street.  It has metered parking.

Directions by Train: From GRAND CENTRAL take the Hudson Line to the Cold Spring Station.
Leaves NYC - 8:46 AM - Arrives in Cold Spring at 10:04 AM.  

Trains back to NYC - Leave at 3:15 PM, 4:19 PM, and 5:17 PM. 

Lunch: 1:00 PM.  Location TBD.  Bring lunch or buy from one of the eateries or deli on Main Street.  

Show and Tell:  Following lunch.  This is the social part of our day and not to be missed.

NOTES:
-  Bring a hat and sunscreen.  You may also want to bring an umbrella if you have one.

-  It will be hot so bring plenty of drinking water.

-  There are benches scattered along the waterfront but bring a stool for more options.
-  We'll be by the water, so you might need a sweater.

SATURDAY: Sketch the Manhattan Skyline from Hoboken

SATURDAY:  July 15, 2023

If there was a 6th borough it would have to be Hoboken, NJ, where NYC is so close you can almost reach out and touch it.  The Manhattan Skyline is incredible when viewed from Hoboken, with its majestic sweep of the Hudson River, train terminals, piers, historic streets and architecture you will love sketching Hoboken's many views.

DETAILS:

WHEN:  We’ll meet at 10 AM - sketching until 3 PM on Saturday, July 15, 2023  Sleeping late?  Come anyway - we'll be there.

WHERE:  See the map below.  We’re meeting at the entrance to Pier A Park, a short walk from the ferry or the Path train.  

HOW:  
The Path Train from 33 St. ↔ Journal Square (via Hoboken)
(Path train - at the intersection of 32nd Street and Sixth Avenue)
Leave 33rd at 9:38 arrive Hoboken at 9:58
Other departure times:   9:23,  10:08, 10:23, 10:38, etc.

The Ferry runs every 30 minutes on the hour and also on the half hour, however, the first ferry doesn’t leave until 10:20.  The weekend cost is $6 each way.

By Car:  Street parking in Hoboken is challenging.  If you intend to drive you might want to pre-book a parking spot, which costs about $30.  (I just checked https://spothero.com/ and entered “Hoboken, Path Train)

LUNCH:  12:00 PM  - Location to be determined on site.  (Probably Pier A or somewhere along the riverwalk.  Bring your lunch or purchase from the local vendors.

AFTERNOON:  1:00 PM  Back to sketching

SHOW AND TELL:  3 PM  Location to be determined - probably our lunch spot.  This is the social part of our day where we will share our sketches, tell stories, and probably talk about art supplies.

THURSDAY July 13: Westchester Sketchers at John Jay Homestead in Katonah

Come explore the John Jay Homestead State Historic Site and experience American History at the home of founding Father John Jay and 5 successive generations of the Jay family.  There are 62 acres to explore and enjoy.  These popular attractions are sure to inspire your artwork:

•  The Carriage Barn - Education & Visitor's Center
• The Farm Lane - the only original entrance to the historic farm once owned by John Jay
• The Formal Gardens - located through the white gate, a fountain and sundial form the centers, beautifully maintained by the Bedford Garden Club and Friends of John Jay Homestead
• The "Ha-has" - a unique landscape feature consisting of rock walls built to keep grazing livestock from getting near the house, but remain invisible when looking down the lawn
• The Herb Garden - created in 1991 on the site of a historic cutting garden and greenhouse.
• The Ice Pond - created for producing ice in the winter to use year-round, now a picturesque spot.

SHOW and TELL: After lunch.  This is the social part of our day where we share our drawings, tips, and stories. It is a time not to be missed.

New Jersey Sketchers at the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts....Again!

Museum of Early Trades and Crafts

In January we visited this lovely museum to sketch the heavily decorated interior.  At that time we said...let's come back and sketch the outside of the building as well.  Now it is time to return and make it happen. 

Join us for a day of sketching at the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts. The museum is in the James Library Building. Built in 1899, this is a fine example of Richardsonian Romanesque Revival architecture.

While our objective is to sketch the exterior of this Victorian confection, there is plenty to do on the inside should the weather call for a cooler or drying place.

Public parking lots are located behind the shops on both sides of Main Street. On-street parking is available on Kings Road and Green Village Road.

Weekday Sketchers at Audubon Plaza and Hispanic Museum Thursday

Inside, outside or across the street, this week we can do it all!

Finally the Hispanic Society, dedicated to the arts of Spain in Washington Heights, has reopened. The museum is located on Audubon Terrace in the Audubon Historic District, which was once the estate  of John J. Audubon.  Framed by  large gates, the terrace is surrounded by Beau Arts Buildings and outdoor sculptures, offering us an opportunity to work on the plaza or inside the building.  

Alternatively, cross the street to the Trinity Church Cemetery and sketch the funerary art, or the Audubon Monument, or the beautiful Gothic church itself.  Or... just turn around and sketch the apartment buildings decorated with bird murals in honor Audubon himself.

No matter the view you choose, you will go home with wonderful sketches of this unusual corner of Manhattan.  BUT,  don't miss the opportunity to see the 14 monumental Sorolla paintings of Spanish Life housed in the museum.

SATURDAY: Sketch the Gladiators

 

This event was discovered and planned by Marion Hammon

Sketching is a passion for most of us, but every once in a while it becomes clear that NYC, our home,  is very fertile ground for OPP - Other People’s Passions.  

This weekend prepare to go back in time, we’re going to be sketching castles, knights, and armed battle.  

NYC Gladiators conduct endurance training, hand-to-hand combat training and they learn about weapons and armor techniques.  Gladiators NYC is taught/lead by contestants from the History Channel's Knight Fight TV show. Ultimately, they work their way up to joining Gladiators NYC's armored combat team, and fight in regional, national, and international tournaments.

DETAILS

What:   Join us sketching in Central Park

Where:   Our first view will be Belvedere Castle. We’ll meet at the southern end of the Great Lawn.  There’s a small lake with a rock outcropping.  Belvedere Castle, (It’s the home of the NYC Weather Observatory.  When they quote NYC temperatures it’s coming from the castle.)  Do not go to the Castle, it’s the view that we want.  We’ll meet on the lawn looking across the lake at the castle.

When:  NOTE: Not our usual time:   Sketching starts at 11 AM and runs until 4 PM on Saturday, July 8, 2023..   We’ll be sketching the gladiators in the afternoon after lunch.

Lunch:  12:30 PM.  Buy food from the many carts and vendors in the park or Bringyourowni

Afternoon:  1:30 PM - Back to sketching.  We’ll walk to the PM area to sketch the gladiators.

Show and Tell:  4 PM  Location to be determined but it will probably be near the tournament area where we'll be sketching in the afternoon.

NOTE:  Although there is no group sketch event we are running a workshop on Saturday.  

Mário Linhares is visiting from Portugal.  He is an accomplished artist and teacher.
