Somehow our group missed doing the WW SketchCrawl #46 yesterday, but Susan and I did a Long Island version. With the frigid conditions Susan came up with a good suggestion...the Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay. An arboretum when the temps were in the teens? Yes!!! Aside from walking from the parking lot to the main greenhouse and having to go outside to another building to use the restrooms, we were in a tropical wonderland surrounded by beautiful, flowering plants. With the only small irritation being dripped on from the condensation on the roof, things could only have been better if there was someone bringing us tropical drinks.
I started with a sketch of a colorful bromeliad plant.
I moved on to the anthuriums.
And a view down the path to one of the doorways.
There were lots of bromeliads...
lots of orchids...
and other tropical plants.
At 4:00 they came and told us the greenhouse was closing, or we could have still been sketching this morning. lol We had been lost in a very special world and oblivious to the outside until we had to bundle up for the walk back to the car.
These came out great Joan. It seemed like there wasn't enough time to sketch everything. A fun sketchcrawl in the tropics!
