World Wide Sketch Crawl #44 - Hoboken, NJ

New York Urban Sketchers headed to New Jersey for the 44th WWSC.

Sketchcrawling in Hoboken

On my way to Hoboken this morning I managed to do a bit of sketching on the LIRR. Their high backed seats really make it hard to get good views of people...unlike the subway where everyone is facing you head on.

Our day in Hoboken was great, and we had a pretty good turnout. Here are a few photos from over by Piers A & C of everyone working.

My first sketch was of the Ferry Terminal.

And then I did the Vietnam Memorial by the splashing fountains.

At Pier C I sketched the view toward the island park.

My mind must have been on food since I sketched a cafe next. LOL

Before we headed off for lunch everyone shared their work from the morning. It was great seeing everyone's work and meeting the newcomers!

Then it was off to lunch. There was a bit of sketching done at the table.

I did sketches of a few people.

Luckily we moved on to sketching buildings which I am much more successful with. LOL

These were done down at the corner of First Street & Garden Street.

Around 4:30 we went back to the terminal and shared our sketchbooks again.
We had an amazing array of great sketches. This is just a part of what was created today.

A few sketchers had already left for the day but we did a few group photos before leaving.
Richard was taking the photos so he is missing from them.

Please make sure you continue reading
and see the post below this written by Jimmy.
Today was his last day sketching with the group.
He is moving back to Paris tomorrow night.
He will be missed!!! Expect visitors, Jimmy!

I spent some time trying to upload the photos and sketches to Sketchcrawl.com but haven't been successful yet. I've been doing exactly what I did the last time but the photos are not going in. I will work on it tomorrow again.

Hoboken Sketch Crawl: Thank You USK NYC, and See you in Paris!

Pier C Park in Hoboken, New Jersey. Rendering so many curves while keeping the perspective has always been daunting, but luckily caffeine helped! I also included bits of the Manhattan skyline (the tall pointed shape in the background is the Empire State Building) as well as the edge of the waterfront promenade.

After more caffeine in the afternoon, I experimented with combining several locations into one drawing and tying all of them with the theme of windows. Hoboken was an ideal place for this game, as most residential buildings have kept or restored their brickwork and window frames. After a century of use, it is also interesting to see how series of windows that were identical at the time of construction are now painted and decorated in different ways as a result of their respective owners' taste and budget. Another interesting thing to notice is that even contemporary constructions seem to mimic the window patterns (the top left window belongs to a building that seems to be less than 10 year old).

Today's session was my last sketching session with USK NYC, as I am moving back to Paris for an undefined period of time - depending on where I end up finding a job. I has been a pleasure to be part of USK NYC, and I will certainly perpetuate the tradition wherever I go!

Weekday Sketch Celebrates Bastille Day!

On Monday July 14th
….let's go storm the fortress
(or at least draw one)

NYC Bastille Day Sketching

In honor of Bastille Day the Urban Sketchers weekday group will meet at Castle Clinton in Battery Park.   We can sketch the fortress, the park and the waterfront.  A chance to draw France's gift to the US - the Statue of Liberty.

From there we can take the ferry to Governor's Island and sketch the two fortresses over there.  (sorry that there is a small charge for the ferry on weekdays: $2 regular or $1 for seniors).  We will go rain or shine as the fort has a deep overhang and we can sketch under the eaves should it rain.   Bring lunch or buy something from the carts or cafe's so that we don't interrupt the flow of the day.

  • Date: MONDAY July 14, 2014
  • Place: The entrance to  Castle Clinton, Battery Park
  • Time:  11:00 AM

If you can’t find us
call Raylie at 201-978-6387

There are no fees or attendance taken. All drawing skill levels are welcome.

44th Worldwide Sketch Crawl July 12th

NYC Urban Sketchers had a great day of sketching at Hoboken. The temperature was just right, shady and breezy.  The views on the waterfront and across to Manhattan were great. See our group posts on the rest of the blog

Here's the group at the start
Here we are at the end of the day

We will get together to sketch and participate in the 44th Worldwide sketch crawl on Saturday July 12th.
Come join us in Hoboken to sketch train terminals, piers and historic streets and architecture. Feel free to show up whenever you want and sketch what you please.

Hoboken is easily accessible through ferry service, PATH train or car.

12ish- Lunch (there are many places to choose from)
1:00 to 4:00 - Sketch along Washington Street

Weekday Sketching from June 26

Our first scheduled NYC Urban Sketchers Weekday Event was a success.!

It was an interesting day that started at beautiful park at City Hall, and included lunch in Chinatown and sketching at Columbus Park.  The sketchers were serenaded by traditional musicians with their live instruments and portable karaoke microphone.  Photos and drawings were submitted by Raylie Dunkle
