MONDAY: Westchester Sketchers at the Harrison Library

 

Harrison Public Library Exhibit: Shapes and Shadows

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, you will want to join us at the Harrison Library for our sketching event this week.  "Shapes and Shadows is an art show by two artists, Marion Schneider and Mitchell Visoky.  The works of Marion Schneider include paintings and pastel works with bold design, a strong passion for color and unique space arrangement.  Extreme light and shadow are strong themes that are evident in this exhibit.

Exhibited by Mitchell Visoky are works of mixed media and collage that uses layered paper, printed images, and vellum photographs that represent the experiences of the artist.  The images give way to the concepts of consciousness, loss and a dreamlike state of minds. The artist strives to achieve tension and correlation between forms by balancing opposites: motion vs. stillness, depth vs surface, concealing vs revealing and positive vs negative spaces.

In addition to sketching the exhibit, we can take our sketchbooks to the Village Green, just outside in front of the library.  Here you may draw memorials, statues, a pretty gazebo or one of the charming homes situated in the vicinity of the library.

DIRECTIONS by TRAIN (From NYC): It is a very convenient trip for Manhattan sketchers.  Take the Metro-North New Haven Line from Grand Central Terminal to the Harrison Station.  Cross the elevated bridge over the tracks and walk across the Village Green to the Harrison Library.  

LUNCH: 12:45 PM.  Bring your own or purchase at the Deli on the corner of Harrison Avenue across the street from the library.

SHOW & TELL.   Weather permitting, we will hold Show and Tell on the side of the library by the picnic tables and shrubbery.  This is the social part of our day when we share our drawings, tips, and stories.  It is a time not to be missed.

NOTES:

• There is street parking near the private houses on Bruce Street, one-hour parking in front of the municipal building, and 2-hour parking in front of the train walkway.
• Harrison Library opens at 9:30 AM so you should be able to find parking in front of the library.
• There are seating options in the park and around the Library but bring a stool for more options.
• In case of rain showers, we will head indoors to sketch in the Harrison.

THURSDAY: New Jersey Sketchers at Ross' Dock in Fort Lee, NJ

 

Join us in Fort Lee where we began one year ago!  

After a winter of indoor events, let’s put the ‘urban’ back in our sketching. 

This time we will be along the Hudson River at Ross' Dock at the bottom of the Palisades cliffs. Views of the George Washington Bridge, Upper Manhattan, and the cliffs make for a great day of sketching.

BY BUS from Manhattan:  Port Authority Station at 178 St to Bridge Plaza in Fort Lee (1 stop). Buy ticket at machines. Let us know you are coming, and we will make arrangements to pick you up.  Taxis are also available.

SATURDAY: Sketch Earth Day at the Queens Botanical Garden

NYC Urban Sketchers Celebrate Earth Day

THE EVENT:

In celebration of Earth Day, the NYC Urban Sketchers will sketch the Climate Arts Festival at the Queens Botanical Garden on April 22, 2023.   There will be loads to see and do.  This event is targeted to attract families. There will be lots of booths and exhibits.  Having us sketching the event will add to the charm.

THE ENVIRONMENT:

Learn how to take care of nature, not just for Earth Month, but every day of the year.  After all, it is an Earth Day celebration. There will be many knowledgeable environmental experts sharing their passion.

THE ART SALE:

In addition, we will be represented in the vendor alley where we will have a table promoting our group. We will also be selling our artwork, or our art prints.  We are splitting  the proceeds with the garden. If you have artwork you’d like to offer for sale, bring it.  Landscapes, garden scenes and outdoor settings would be particularly relevant.

What:   We’ll be sketching the Earth Day Climate Arts Festival at the Queens Botanical Gardens

When:  Saturday, April 22, 2023 starting at 11 AM

Where:  

• The Main Garden Entrance 43-50 Main Street, Flushing, NY .  
• If you are coming by car use the Parking Garden Entrance, 42-80 Crommelin Street.  
• (Special Event parking is $15 for the day)

How:  

Subway:

• Take the no. 7 subway or Long Island Rail Road (Port Washington line) to Main Street/Flushing.
• Then, take the Q44SBS or Q20A/B bus, or walk eight blocks south to QBG along Main Street

How Much:

• Adults – $6
• Seniors (age 62+) – $4
• Students with ID – $4

Lunch:  12:30 PM - Let’s meet by the Visitors Center (see photo) and we’ll find a spot for a picnic.  Bring your own or rely on the many local Queens delis and bodegas.

Show and Tell:   3:00 PM - We’ll meet back at the Visitors Center, to share our drawings, and talk about art things.

Wednesday: Joint Weekday and Westchester Sketchers at MoMA

 

MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

Joint event hosted by Cathy Gutterman and Marianne Milzoff

Founded in 1929, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) was the first museum devoted to the modern era.  The museum's rich collection offers a panoramic view of modern and contemporary art from innovative European paintings and sculptures of the 1880s to today's film, design and performance art.

Collection highlights include Claude Monet's Waterlilies, Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night and Pablo Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon.  Currently on Exhibition is Georgia O'Keefe: To See Take Time.  Best known for her flower paintings, O’Keeffe (1887-1986) also made extraordinary series of works in charcoal, pencil, watercolor, and pastel. SATURDAY: Sketching Behind the Lions

Behind the lions is one of the world's great libraries.  It's a visual treat both inside and outside filled with the Beaux-Arts details that are so much fun to sketch.

• It was officially opened in 1911 and at the time it was the largest marble structure in the United States
• The main reading room was contemporaneously the largest of its kind in the world (You can't quite see the curvature of the earth but there are lots of perspective challenges to work out.)

DETAILS

What:   We’ll be sketching in the main branch of the Manhattan Public Library, (AKA the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building)

Where:   The building covers two blocks from 40th Street to 42nd Street at 476 5th Ave​.  We'll meet in the main lobby on the left side.  If you come late, anyone sketching in the library is likely an Urban Sketcher!​

When:  Start time - 1​0​ ​AM.  We will be there until 3 PM.   Running late?  Messed up subways?  Come anyway - we'll be there.

How:   Assuming we can all get to 42nd St and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan?

​Lunch:  12:00 Noon:  The library has no cafeteria.  There are many many food places in the area but none that will accommodate all of us​.  Lunch is up to you, we'll be back sketching at 1 PM

Show and Tell:  3:00 PM - We’ll try to find a quiet place to meet to share our sketches and tell art stories.  Likely location is tucked under the staircase on the first floor.

NOTE:

-    There is no coat check 

-    I’ve used my stool there many times.  It gives you more sketching opportunities.​  Be considerate and stayed tucked out of everyone's way.​

THURSDAY: Westchester Sketchers at the Hudson River Museum

 

The Hudson River Museum is a preeminent cultural institution in Westchester County and the New York metropolitan area.  Situated on the banks of the Hudson River in Yonkers, New York, the HRM’s mission is to engage, inspire, and connect diverse communities through the power of the arts, sciences, and history.

Current exhibitions include:

Edward Steichen: In Exaltation of Flowers March 10, 2023–February 18, 2024

Edward Steichen (1879–1973), one of the leading photographers of the twentieth century, spent his early career equally devoted to both painting and photography. This exhibition highlights his most ambitious project as a painter—three large-scale paintings he created on the cusp of World War I as part of a series of seven murals.

Natalya Khorover, Teaching Artist-in-Residence,  Spring and Summer 2023

During her residency, Khorover will conduct unique, hands-on, upcycling workshops inspired by “Order / Reorder” that spark creativity while contributing to the health of the planet. One of her big projects is to work with the community to create a large-scale, mixed-media art quilt of the Palisades that is made entirely from recycled single-use plastics.

The HRM needs your help gathering materials for Natalya’s workshops!  Please donate soft single-use plastic packaging, clear plastic lids from takeout containers, clear plastic clamshell containers, pull tabs from beverage containers, cardboard cereal boxes, scraps of fabric, ribbon, wrapping paper, and any other hard single-use plastic tidbits. NOTE: You can drop off your donations at the front desk.

Art as both creative output and curated object is in constant dialogue with the past and the present.  This never-ending conversation pushes art into its future, forcing us to continually reimagine how we project a vision of ourselves and the world around us.  Order / Reorder: Experiments with Collections explores approaches to looking at American art that consider expressions of American identity from new perspectives.

LUNCH: Since the Museum opens at Noon, we won’t have a scheduled time for lunch.  Please bring your own lunch/snack, or purchase something from the Museum Shop.

SHOW and TELL: 2:30 PM A classroom has been reserved for us from 2:30-5 PM. This is the social portion of our day when we will share our drawings, techniques, and stories. It is a time not to be missed.

Weekday Sketchers on Roosevelt Island for Cherry Blossom Season

There are so many places in New York to see the seasonal display of cherry blossoms.  One of the best is Roosevelt Island.  Join us this Wednesday to capture their beauty against the backdrop of the Queensboro Bridge and the UN building.
