SATURDAY: Sketch the Museum of the American Indian

The National Museum of the American Indian 

Located in the historic Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House. 

 SATURDAY, January 14, 2023

The National Museum of the American Indian is stunning, inside and out, - a NYC's  Beaux Arts masterpiece.  I believe Herman Melville's day job was in this building when it was our Custom House.  The museum always has interesting displays and artwork.  In the past I've been tempted to draw the American Indian artwork but at other times the artwork seemed to end up influencing  the way I was drawing the building and the other sketchers.  Interesting stuff!

The museum is owned by the US Government which means to enter we'll need to pass through a metal detector.  They also state that masks are required.

 DETAILS 

Where: The National Museum of the American Indian– at One Bowling Green, New York, is located on the south side of Bowling Green, in lower Manhattan, adjacent to the northeast corner of Battery Park. 

When: Start time: 10 AM. Admission to the museum is free. 

How: 

Lots of ways to get there by Subway 

- 4 & 5 trains to Bowling Green 

- 1 train to Rector Street or South Ferry 

- R (& W on weekdays) trains to Whitehall Street 

- J & Z trains to Broad Street 

- 2 & 3 trains to Wall Street 

 Lunch: 12:00 PM.  Meet in the lobby at noon for a short walk (location to be confirmed on Saturday) 

 Afternoon: 1 PM - Back sketching at the museum 

 Show and Tell: 3:00 PM - The social part of our day when we'll share our artwork and tell sketching stories.  Location to be confirmed on Saturday.  

 

NOTES: 

- Despite the metal detector I’ve brought my sketching stool numerous times with no problem. A stool is always a handy item that allows you to sketch from the perfect spot.

Weekday Sketchers at Brooklyn Museum  

Join us as we travel to the Brooklyn Museum of Art (BMA) to view the collection with an optional ticket to see the Thierry Muggler show and much much more.  

The BMA is a wonderful place chocked that is full of infinitely sketch worthy artifacts.  The Egyptian collection is world renowned as are many of the Asian art collections.  The American decorative Arts collection  is endless and the colonial homes and period rooms on the top floor are fascinating.  To say nothing of the permanent installation of Judy Chicago's "The Dinner Party". ( a MUST see if you haven't ever done so!) And on and on it goes!

THURSDAY: Westchester Sketchers at the ArtsWestchester Gallery, White Plains

For more than 50 years, ArtsWestchester has been the community’s connection to the arts.  Founded in 1965, it is the largest, private, not-for-profit arts council in New York State.  Its mission is to provide leadership, vision, and support, to ensure the availability, accessibility, and diversity of the arts.  

In 1998, ArtsWestchester purchased the nine-story neo-classical bank building at 31 Mamaroneck Avenue which has since been transformed into a multi-use resource for artists, cultural organizations, and the community.  A two-story gallery is located on the first floor of ArtsWestchester’s historic building on Mamaroneck Avenue.

The current exhibition at the Gallery is called The Social Fabric, which features recent works and site-responsive commissions by artists who use textiles and fabrics to explore issues of broad social consequence. The exhibition investigates the role that fiber and textiles play in social discourse.  The artists leverage the accessible characteristics of their materials to address vital themes through artistic languages and strategies. Their wide-ranging explorations include issues of identity, consumerism, climate, equity, and justice.

SATURDAY: Sketch the Dome

 

New York City’s Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, the seat of the Episcopal diocese of New York, just got a new dome.  The original dome was considered an engineering marvel and it took more than one hundred years to replace the "temporary" solution.

The dome was nearly 135 feet wide. It rises to 165 feet above the crossing floor — if the Statue of Liberty was spirited uptown from New York Harbor she would fit inside.  The cathedral, a concoction of Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic styles is the length of two football fields, making it the largest in the world.  It's also an official city landmark as well as a beloved New York institution and popular tourist destination.

The dome was never meant to be permanent; rather, it was a temporary topping over the crossing’s four gigantic granite arches until a spire could be erected, at which point it was to be removed.  That was back in 1909.  Now, more than a hundred years later, that dome has been replaced by one they hope will stand the test of time.

In the past we’ve enjoyed choir practice on Saturdays which fills the cathedral with beautiful voices and stirring organ music.

When:  Meet at 10 AM.  Sleeping late?  Come anyway - we’ll be there the whole day.

• Cathedral Parkway and 110th Street - B, C, train.  This is the easier walk
• Cathedral Parkway and 110th Street - 1 train.  Going there this route is uphill.

The Church is asking for donations: 

• $10 Adults
• $8 Seniors/Students

Lunch:  12:30 PM.  There are many food choices on Broadway, one block away.  We will probably not be eating together

Afternoon:  1:30 PM  Back to sketching

Show and Tell:  3:00 PM - Location to be determined.  Based on the weather and attendance we’ll determine where we’ll share our work..

Weekday Sketchers At the Met for CHROMA

Join us this week as we explore the Greek and Roman galleries through different eyes: those of a citizen of the ancient cities who would have seen these statures painted in full color.  

The Met has recreated a number of pieces and present them in the colors they would have been painted.  The pieces are scattered throughout the galleries and are rather startling to look at, whole, intact and colorful.  Make sure to visit the interpretive gallery on the upper level where the process of how they determined the original color  is explained in detail.

Art Exhibit at New Amsterdam Library, 

9 Murray Street, New York, NY 10007

Tuesday, January 10, 2023, 5PM - 7PM

This is the second exhibit sponsored by NYC Urban Sketchers. Join us for this opening night event. Come view beautiful images created by fellow sketchers and enjoy some light refreshments. While not required, the NYC Health Department is currently recommending masks for indoor events.

A total of 126 images were submitted for this exhibit. A three-person jury evaluated each image for originality, craftsmanship and overall impression. Based on scores provided by the jury, 38 images were selected for display at the library. The exhibit will run from January 9th until February 27th, 2023. During the run of the show, there will be a continuous slide presentation of all 126 images submitted for the exhibit. 

Hope to see you at the New Amsterdam Library on January 10th.
