Saturday Sketch the WinterGarden

Sketching Under Tropical Palm Trees

(event planned and developed by Peggy Roalf)

This Saturday December 13th - we’ll visit the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place [formerly called the World Financial Center], with it’s 16 majestic palm trees under a 60-foot-high glass solarium, opened in 1988, and designed by architect César Pelli.

Inside the Winter Garden:
Feast your eyes on views across New York Harbor, with Jersey City in the distance, and a lovely little skating rink in the foreground.
Figure drawing artists: this one’s for you—all framed by tropical palm trees!
[Here’s a neat article about growing the palms that were installed after the Winter
Garden was rebuilt following 9/11.]

Part 1 - When: 10:30 am We’ll meet at the Brookfield Place main lobby, which overlooks
the new World Trade Center Transit Hub, designed by architect Santiago
Calatrava, which will open next year. Bring some sharp pencils to capture its
spikey dinosaur-like roof.

Meet in the Main Lobby

Subway - 4,5,6/N,R to the new Fulton Center
1,2,3/A,C,E to Chambers Street
  • Walk South, turn right [West] onto Vesy Street\
  • Enter PATH terminal [it says “closed weekends” but enter through far left door].
  • Take escalators down to the new WTC West Concourse, which goes under West
  • Street and leads up a massive set of escalators directly up to Brookfield Place

Main Lobby. That’s where we’ll meet.

NOTE:  If you miss the PATH Station, just continue walking across Vesy Street; cross
West Street; turn left at SE corner of Vesy/West Streets, walk under construction
barricade to new Brookfield Plaza Main Lobby.

Please use these directions, as the information on Brookfield Place/Winter  Garden website is extremely out of date.

Lunch: 12:30 - 1:30 Hudson Eats, on the second floor, is a large food court with
something for everyone. There’s plenty of seating, including a big round table for
12 or more—maybe we’ll be the lucky ones to get it!

Afternoon:  Sketch until 2:45  PM

Part 2:
Hop the A Train: Exit at 23rd Street, walk over to the School of Visual Arts
Chelsea Gallery, where we’ll visit We Tell Stories, an amazing exhibition of
illustrations by more than 300 artists, at 601 West 26th Street, 15th Floor, NY, NY.

Part 3 - Show & Tell:
4:30, until ... - We'll share drawings and stories over brews and pub fare at journalist Sebastian Unger’s popular watering hole, the Half King,  West 23rd Street, just west of 10th Avenue
[a three-block walk from the gallery].

  1. Peggy,
Thank you for including the article about re-planting the palms at the Winter Garden. It really enhanced the experience of sketching this amazing space.
