SATURDAY: Sketch MOMA PS1

Sketching at School: MoMA PS1

In Long Island City.

MOMA PS1

The historic 19th-century public school first opened as an experimental studio and exhibition space in 1976; was transformed into a first-class contemporary art museum in 1997, and became an affiliate of The Museum of Modern Art in 2000.

The building retains much of the style and spirit of an elementary school, right down to the smell of the wax on the linoleum! Some of the Up and Down staircases are permanent art installations. You’ll feel right at home here.

The brick interior spaces are great to draw; so are the exhibitions and the visitors.

There’s a fun lunchroom where we can meet for a snack. There are several long-terminstallations, from a video by Pipilotti Rist that can be viewed through a hole in the floor to stairwell installation by William Kentridge. Last, and not least, there’s an excellent bookstore adjacent to the lunchroom.
