St. John the Divine in Morningside Heights is America's answer to the great cathedrals of Europe. Standing in all of its Gothic glory and still under construction after more than 100 years, St. John's offers us a trove of sketching possibilities: the cathedral, both inside and out, the magnificent Peace Fountain and the beautiful gardens surrounding the many buildings on its almost 12 acre property.

This week we will be sketching the exterior of the building and specifically the Peace Fountain, located just to the south of the cathedral.   Standing almost 40 feet in the air, the fountain offers endless scenes of angels and devils, animals and humans and  mythological figures that portray the struggle of good over evil.  Try to capture it all or just concentrate on small portions of the fountain.  Even the railings around the fountain have wonderful sculptures to sketch.

Don't like the fountain, no problem, sketch the amazing building or wander through the rose garden, sculpture garden or biblical garden.  Truly there is something here for everyone.
