Good News - Bad News - No Sketch Event for tomorrow January 4, 2014

THE BAD NEWS
We're canceling the sketch event for tomorrow, Saturday, January 4, 2014.  The forecast is for a bitterly cold morning.  I know the sketchers in Minneapolis and Sweden will laugh at us, but the point is to make this appealing to the greatest number of NYC Sketchers.

THE GOOD NEWS
Let me make it up by trying to entice you with upcoming sketch events.

1)   A number of people have suggested how great it would be to all go sketching together on a NYC bus or train.  There are logistic problems, since once we started there will be no way for any latecomers to catch up.  Still, it would be a lot of fun.

I've discussed this idea with Lance Gambis.  Many of you know Lance and his son Nick who have both sketched with us on a number of occasions.  Lance has volunteered to be the videographer for the event.  He's got a real talent with a video camera, and I follow his work.  He's been turning his son into a media star.  If you haven't done so already you should check out his Nick videos (click this link) on YouTube.

Details to follow, but it will be a a Moveable Sketching Feast.

2)  When you want good ideas for winter sketching who better to ask than the sketchers in Montreal?

Mark Holmes organized a Portrait Party (click this linkfor the sketchers at USK:MTL.  This sketch event manages one of the most difficult Urban Sketching problems.  The people that we draw move.  They never sit still.  They change positions.  They become aware that we're sketching them which changes the dynamic.  They either become self conscious and move, or become curious and want to look.  Either reaction means your model is gone.

Think about it, who sits more still that a sketcher?  Sketchers are engrossed in what they're doing and if you draw them they're sympathetic to what you're doing.
