If you've never attended the Dragon Boat Races
you will be astounded
that there is such a major city event
that you've never heard about.
This is a spectacle worth seeing.
- Dragon Boat Racing uses colorful teak boats, weighing about one ton each.
- They have a dragon head at the front and Dragon tail at the rear.
- The boats are piloted by up to 20 crewmen.
- Over 700 athletes participate in these races.
WHAT'S THERE TO SKETCH?
As they wait for their heats, the racers practice Tai-chi and perform other warm up exercises along the shoreline of NYC’s largest lake. We will have the opportunity to draw people, boats and scenery. The teams are sponsored by various NY Corporations and corporate tents line the pathway that runs along the lake-shore
We will sketch along the lake shore in the morning and in the festival area in the afternoon. The festival area is set up like a market place with lots of food and trinket vendors selling items and there is a cultural stage with music performances. If you wish to hike further north and west, you can sketch the Unisphere and nearby sculpture: Rocket Thrower
DETAILS
When: We will meet in the morning at 10 AM. Running late? Come anyway - you'll be glad you did.
Where: We'll setup along the eastern shoreline of Meadow Lake, north of the boathouse and across the sidewalk from the Con Edison Tent.
The View: Meadow Lake is scenic. Our water view has the World’s Fair Architectural monuments in the background.
What to Bring: The area is a meadow with plenty of grass, but few trees. The sun is often strong. Please bring a hat and bottles of water. You are also encouraged to bring a folding chair that is easy to carry.
How to get there: There is no public parking at Meadow Lake. You are encouraged to drive or take the train to the Mets Stadium and get the shuttle bus there.
When you get off the shuttle bus, follow the crowd as it goes north (to your right) to the race site. The races are free to watch so do not stand in any lines to sign-in. (Those lines are for the race participants.) The races take place on Meadow Lake to the north of the Boat House.
Directions to Festival Site:
BY CAR
Take the Long Island Expressway to Van Wyck Expressway south, exit at Exit 11, then stay on service road to the Park. There will be NO Parking in the usual Parking Lot unless a Parking Pass is Presented.
BY SUBWAY
#7 train to Mets-Willets Point Station: transfer to the special event bus.
E, F, R trains to Jackson Heights/ Roosevelt Avenue: transfer to the Flushing bound #7 train to Mets-Willets Point Station.
BY BUSES
Q48 on Roosevelt Avenue to Mets-Willets Point Station: transfer to the special event bus.
Special buses will operate between the Shea Stadium subway station and the Flushing Meadow Park festival site from 8:00am to 6:00pm. The Shea Stadium subway station is nearby to Shea Stadium parking lots.
A MetroCard is required to transfer between the park and the subway station.
When leaving the Park, be sure you have a MetroCard in order to board the bus.
Passengers without a MetroCard must pay full fare on the bus in exact coins. The fare is $2.50 per ride
Note the shuttle buses that run between Mets Stadium subway station and the Flushing Meadow Park festival site do so from 8:00am to 6:00pm. Last bus will be at 6PM.
